I'm under the impression that a "sin" is when you purposefully do something that is wrong, versus trying to do well and accidentally doing something wrong.

indulgence and mistakes are two different forms of error.
if you read the scripture a little longer you will find that sin is divided into two categories. Sin and iniquity.
iniquity is what is done by those that are Righteous.
Sin becomes greater wickedness than the righteous are willing to do.
however making a mistake is not the same thing as being a criminal. jesus rebuked Isreal for making Mole hills into mountains and also used the term choking on a gnat but swallowing a camel.
so it depends on the severity of the "mistake" which makes it a sin. generally it is criminal behaviour that defines what a sin is.

A passenger car is a vehicle, a bus is a vehicle. But is a passenger car a bus? No.
A mistake is not necessarily a sin, but a sin is definitely a mistake whether recognized as one or not. Sometimes sins are casual mistakes (done by accident) ; unfortunately, many sins are willful ones--I would still classify them as mistakes but in these cases the word implies willful wrong action.
When a person walks down a staircase and missteps and stumbles that is a mistake! but is it a sin? I don't think so.
When I by mistake tape the wrong TV program, is that a sin? I cannot imagine how it could be!

Thank you I needed this question today to bring back down to earth. Let me explain. My huband manage to smash our tv when it toppled over in his van. He was carrying back in his can from being repaired (only 2 years old). And instead of making sure it would not topple over he never bothered so when he went round a sharp bend the tv just toppled and smashed.
Well you see he was already in my bad books over something else so TV incident was just the last straw. Not only was it an expensive TV in the first placed it cost 175.00 to get it repaired what with that and having to get a new one we are talking a great deal of money here. He is so cavalier about things he makes me mad. So you can see why I needed to see your question.
Was his mistake a sin or a weakness, well I have to put it down to a weakness. The weakness being is that he never ever heeds anyones advice..like me advising about securing the TV. But it it a sin..well he will think so when he finds we can't afford a new widescreen 32"
So there you have it...to err is human but to forgive is devine!
Quite funny when you think about it as my husband surely must be the only plonker that earns well above the national average in salary.

Well there is no excuse for ignorance so let that be the 1st point. Obviously everyone makes mistakes and may indulge in sin especially when they are weak such as the cant control there sexual urges and go sleep around. But that is why we ask for forgiveness. But do note that forgiveness is only granted to those who regret what they done and take measure to prevent it from occuring in the future.
We must keep our selves away from sin.e.g dont hang with friends that take drugs etc or else we will be tempted etc

No, a mistake is precisely that! the good thing about a mistake is we can learn from it and know that which we didn't know before. It's a way of moving on and correcting the past.
A sin is something which is detrimental to yourself, your family, your community, your faith, but you do it any way

If the mistake is falling in bed with my friends wife then yes it's a sin.
If the mistake is not filing your taxes on time then its a mistake and not a sin.

I think it is a sin not to make a mistake as then we would never learn and develop our experiences as humans
But I'm with the social worker comment or maybe thats just what it felt like!

Unrepentance of a mistake knowing full well the consequences it has on others is sin.
What kind of mistake?, tempted by something or didn't know at the time?.

We all make mistakes but you should look at mistakes as learning curves and nobody can say you sinned because you were learning!
