I think it depends on how well you take care of it. Some people take off their shoes, which I think is a good idea. But they say that you should not go bare foot on carpet because the natural oil on your feet gets on the carpet over time and will attract dirt.

well not a plain pattern or long pile. long piles tend to go flat over a period of time and plain patern show dirt more.
i would suggest a wilton style or axminster although they arent the most modern they are the most practical. hope this helps

any carpet will last pretty well, it's the padding that really counts. Get the highest density padding half inch your dealer offers.
