Making a buttercream frosting, have lots of sugar, but no powder sugar. Is it possible to substitute? How? Would the measurements be different?

no but there are recipes for boiled or cooked frosting's that require regular sugar or brown sugar. just try to google "boiled icing" or "cooked icing"

You could, but it would taste very grainy and sweet. Use no more than 1/4 cup or it will taste awful.
Icing sugar, as we call it here in Australia, is made with a mix of powder sugar and cornflour, and although in theory it sounds like you can 'beat' the sugar, you can't. It would just taste like an awfully sweet muck, as powder sugar is made from the remains of sugar, not sugar itself.
You can also make frosting out of cream and sugar though, or cream and melted chocolate. Also beaten eggwhite with sugar.

The problem you are going to have is that regular sugar give a grainy texture to your frosting. While I personally havent tried the solution I am going to give you , I believe it will work . You can either use corn syrup or liquify your regular sugar by completely dissolving it in a small amount of liquid over low heat . Allow it to cool and then slowly add the butter or Crisco as you are beating it. It should work

regular sugar is the wrong consistency. the frosting would be totally different. go to the store and get some powdered sugar.

You could but it won't be as smooth and creamy. I wouldn't substitute more that 1/4 of the required amount. If you don't have powdered sugar, try putting regular sugar in a food processor or blender. It won't be quite as fine but its better than nothing. The measurements should be the same.
