it's a temporary allocation of space on your hard drive to use as extended memory. Used for large programs or devices that require more memory than standard devices can allocate to run.

Virtual Memory is a space on your hard drive that the computer uses as a cache. It will also hold old files that you no longer use and normally I set mine to a smaller size than just letting Windows do it. The original idea was to have a place that the computer would place files or programs that you are using a lot and then it would speed things up as it could look there first for them instead of searching the hard drive. I have used mine both with it and without it and have really noticed no big change except I have more free space the less I set the VM for.

Virtual memory is when your ram (Random Access Memory) is running low and you need more to run programs. Ram then borrows memory from your harddrive to act as RAM. This is called virtual memory. Its not usually a good thing because your processor is now working harder and your computer will run slower. You can fix this by either adding more memory, or closing some programs you have running.

totaly different answers. Yes it is porrowed memory. No it can't make your computer run faster. Gibing it more memory space can seem to make things faster but does not.

More RAM will increase the speed

Keeping the trash out of your computer is one of the best ways to keep it running at a good speed. Most computers have a lot of junk on them that people don't even know is there. \\

Learn how to clean the junk and you will be much happier with your machine.

Virtual memory is fake memory that comes from hard disk drive space, as opposed to real memory which is physical. It assists the operating system by providing additional total memory, but is not as fast as real memory.
