It's your age, not the times we live in. You are at or slightly past the mid-point of an average life. You are a mature adult and are likely noticing that each passing year seems to be going faster?
As far as "these dangerous times"... What decade hasn't harbor some danger (or perceived danger)? Desert Storm, Avian Flu & SARS, Vietnam War, Cold War, death from common diseases before the vaccines we enjoy today, Great Depression and so on. It's you age. None of this stuff fazes kids because, thankfully, they don't yet have our awareness or realize our limited mortality.
This feeling is normal. And as another person replied, don't dwell on it! Enjoy yourself. Get a hobby that involved meeting with others. An active church group. Something.

You say you are not depressed, then why in the world would you sit around and think about Death. That is about as depressing as it comes. I am 52 and No I do not sit around and think about Death. It comes sooner or later to all of us, and I am just enjoying what time I have on this Earth, you should also.

I think maybe it's part of re-evaluating your life and goals. It happens in mid-life. You think of the things you've done, and the things you still want to do. With that last thought comes the awareness that you're probably at the point where there are more years behind you than in front of you. It tends to be a sobering thought. With that said, get busy doing the fun and interesting things you want to do. At 48, you've managed to put things in perspective. Doing the things that mean something to you will help balance things out, too.

Death is a natural part of life, you cannot have one without the other. When we are young we think we are invincible, but as we get older we know it is a matter of time. We start to lose family around us, parents, grandparents, friends, children, what ever the relationship is. So we start to think of our immortality and when is it going to happen to us. It is a normal feeling, but if you remember that we cannot have one without the other, that memories live in our hearts forever and that everyone has two families, one here on earth with this family and one with God and when he gets lonely he calls us home. Good luck and God bless and put angels on your pillows.

As we reach that mid-point in our life, it's normal to think more of death and its inevitability. We are living in very dangerous times and that alone is enough to make us ponder how vulnerable we are to sudden demise. And if you're not grounded in faith in God, the Holy Spirit may be stirring your heart to make a decision for the Lord while you still have time. It's important to recognize those things which we cannot change and give them over to God and not worry about them. And it's imperative to recognize those things which we can do something about and take appropriate action. God bless!

I would say it would be because of the society in which we live. 48 isn't 'old' so it wouldn't have any relavancy to thinking of death constantly. However, it could just be something in your subconcious.

I'm guessing it has to do with both. But my husband is your same age; he wakes up in the middle of the night afraid and usually mentions death. When I talk to him in the a.m. he doesn't remember. I suggest you to talk to your dr just like I did to my husband, he was referred to a Psychiatrist. Good luck.

I've lost two people close to me in the past few months and I know that's why it's on my mind. I think depending on your health and life circumstances (and age) we all have times where we are more reflective on our mortality. I do know what you mean.

They say that every single person goes through a stage of Suicidal Ideation sometime in their life. It's completely normal.. unless you feel like acting upon it. ;) It'll pass.
