Over the years, I have purchased many diffferent types of coffee makers (some very expensive), all types of ground and whole beans. I use cold filtered water. Someone told me to add a pinch of salt. That did not help. Any suggestions?

Don't use boiling water, wait for it to cool a little. Boiling water can scorch the coffee and taint the flavour.

The path to coffee nirvana is your grinder

There are many components to making a great cup of coffee at home.

Equipment – Grinder, Brewer, Altitude, Water….

Barista – (You) education on coffee. The science and pleasure of coffee is much like wine. In fact Coffee was fist made into a wine in the 1700’s until the bean was discovered as a component to now one of the top sought after beverages.

Understanding Terminology – Body, aroma, smooth, bold, Crème’…..

Bean/region – Sumatra and Cuban are just one of my many favorites. Contemplate that the bean you are using is perhaps not the bean you really like.

I use my own personal roaster, who I used to buy my beans from for my coffee shop. If I can not get any of his I pick up a bag of beans from COSTCO. Sometimes they have a great selection and other times I find myself at the local Starbucks to buy my bean. But that is my most expensive option.

There are a few sites I would recommend you go to as well.

www.coffeecrew.com – For equipment and techniques
www.coffeeunivers.com – for everything else.

Take some time, enjoy the journey, it is well worth it to have that incredible cup at home!

It might be the brand of coffee you are buying more than the coffee maker or the water (although the water at my Mom's apt. is horrid when making coffee).

Try ordering Cafe Britt coffee on-line from Costa Rica. They have all types & you can pick from mild to espresso depending on your taste. We like the Organic Shade Grown coffee (ground) and order a case at a time.

It may not be the coffee! It may just be your taste buds!

I once had a Wine shop and a woman came into it one day and told me she liked the 'taste" of Cabernet but she wanted a "Sweet" one!

I had to break the bad news to her that there are no "Sweet" Cabernet wines! They are all DRY! That is what makes Cabernets the wines they are! -

If you use a clean coffee pot and cold fresh water along with Good coffee - you should be able to produce a Good cup of Coffee. Maybe there is something about the "filtered" water that distracts from the final brewed coffee?

So -

Its either the water that you are using, or the coffee that does not suit your taste buds!

Find some Costa Rican Coffee which can be located "on line" and order a small bag of it just to try it first before ordering more of it! I order mine from - Cafebritt.com who offers a fantastic variety of coffees from Costa Rica as well as other countries.

I always drink Costa Rican Coffee because that is the one that suits me and I never tire of drinking it and I can get it when I go to Costa Rica for about $2.75 a pound ground!

Good Luck!

Yeah, the art is 2-fold: it is coffee, and it is...water.
For good coffee, don't buy over-the-counter or big brands, they mix different brands of coffee, even coffee from different locations...not a good sign. Instead, find a gourmet coffee shop that specializes in it.

And second, don't forget to filter your water - buy any one of high-quality water filters available from many stores now - again, here don't go with "brands" 'cause their filters just plain suck.

And then - brew to your own taste!

Try a Cuisinart single cup
server. Uses regular filters.
Makes the whole pot, then turns
off in two hours. Coffee stays
good all day long. Disperses
one cup at a time.
Makes great coffee.

The pinch of salt trick does little
more than make coffee flat.
It's really for people who don't
like coffee.

It is possible to make good coffee at home if you have the right machine and coffee beans or ground coffee beans.

I have drunk the same brand of coffee for oh ever so many years. Everyone likes it. FOLGERS, classic roast. I have tried some of the current fads in coffee. More like a dessert. Personally Hot home made apple pie is better. With a cup of FOLGERS.
