Andrew,
First off....good choice! once the labs are out of the pupply stage they are excellent dogs. Are you fearful of the puppy chewing anything ( I mean that ! ) up? if so do puppy proof the house and get lots of chew toys. Now the answer of your question: I would recommend looking through your local paper, or by word of mouth- there are a lot of good breeders out there. But there are some incidents of puppy mills also reasearch that term please before you select a breeder should you choose that avenue. I procured my Lab through a local one with an excellent reputation. Now another option is ( gasp ) the pound. dont cringe...there are a lot of dogs that are available, in this breed that you can find there. Its a plus on both ends: they already are vaccinated, when you get them...and they will not be put to sleep because they are not wanted. So it really depends on your location and options in that area, available. Best Wishes,
Jennifer

Only buy from a reputable breeder. Go through the Labrador breed clubs to find one & make sure the parents have been tested for hip dysplasia & eye diseases (the breeder will be able to show you certifcates proving this has been done). Check out the list of breed clubs at the bottom of this page:

Labrador's are a pretty common breed. Therefor you should check out your humane society first. It will be cheaper than from a breeder, and be updated with shots and be in good health. If there's no luck there try the newspapers. If you want a high quality dog however, try getting one from a breeder. Usually you can find breeder's directories on the internet. Or go to a Veterinarian's office and they will sometimes have lists of breeders, or know breeders personally.

You need to do a search for labrador breeders in your area.
But don't just find one breeder. Visit many to make sure you are getting high quality puppies.
Labradors are the most popular dog at this point...and many just jump on the bandwagon and just breed the poor things.
There are many breeders that just do not understand that without proper breeding, you end up with very sick puppies.
Labs are prone to many health problems...but don't let that discourage you.
A reputable breeder will educate you on their issues and provide you with a healthy, happy puppy.

If you want a puppy go to a reputable breeder and be prepared to pay for it.
Alternatively get 1 of the many that need good homes from shelters.

Labs are one of the number one dogs in the pound. They are nearly free. Often, very very cheap or free in the paper. Especially black labs. When you move into yellow or brown, they can cost.
I love my lab. Great dog. Do check the pound and the paper before buying one someplace else. Good luck!
