if you want to buy an esteem, go for the lxi vesion than the vxi .lxi comes with many luxuriuos options such as power steering and power windows which is enough .but esteem is only suitable for not more than 4 people .when it comes to other cars , why don't you try out the Tata Indigo (petrol and diesel). It's maintainance is low as well as it gives decent fuel efficiency.the new Indigo's design is splendid and also it is very comfortable . if you are a family of more than 5 or if you want good luggage space, do try out the Indigo Marina . you can also have a look at Fiat petra .
you can also test drive the new Indica , hyundai getz, santro xing , palio , swift , wagon r , zen estilo .

Petrol cars are very low maintenance, but not as effiecient as diesels. If you had your mind set on an Esteem, I'd ask you to go abck to the showroom and bargain a better price for the Baleno. It is a great performer with a 100hp engine, and has a much better ride than the Esteem, and returns nearly the same fuel efficiency.

If you are willing to give up on a little driving pleasure, no car is cheaper in this class to hold on to than an Indigo/ Marina Diesel. But do note that these cars have to be maintained well, especially in its frist 3 years if you want a longer hassle-free life.

You have not mentioned the number of occupants in car (approx.).

If you are travelling daily 60 KM then both Diesel or Petrol cars are suitable for you. You can select Maruti Esteem which is good option for 4 people and with an average of around 15 km/ltr. It is a good car with low maintenance cost, fairly comfortable and availability of spares and service centres at remote places (as you are planning to go for outing also).

You have another option of going for Indica or Indigo (Diesel) having a good average of around 19 km/ltr and 16km/ltr respectively and both are very comfortable cars. If you want good luggage space you can even go for Indigo Marina.

There are other good cars also available but just make sure availability of spares and service centres as you are planning for long drives as you may be in trouble if there is a breakdown in some remote place or rural areas.

Best way to select your car is to note down your requirement/ features you require in the car on a paper (serially) and write the name of car which matches your each specification.

So you will know which car matches most of your specifications.
But you have to be realistic in finalising your specifications e.g. you can not have both power and mileage together or a car with all features at very cheap rates. You have to determine the best mix of all.

Hope this will help in deciding your car. Good luck.

I suggest you take a look at the fiesta 1.4 and the hyundai accent. They both are good cars. Since you will be going for along drive and if you want to seat 5 persons comfortably the U-VA is a good option. The U-VA is also a good option and since it is a Chevrolet you can have solid reliability. The swift diesel is also a good car but if you want space then ignore this.

IT is a good car mainly for the purpose of that category at that time of introduction. It has become slightly outdated right now though there are plans at their end for modifications. It is comfortable for long drive for the people sitting in he front side. For long drives it may not be suitable with other people in the back seat.

If you could consider paying slightly more you can consider going in for Honda City ZX. It is comfortable for both ways that too for long drive.
