You should. Colombia is an amazing place to see and explore. The bad image of it, is due because of a certain region of the country, but if you stay out of it, and visit certain regions like Cartagena (which is simply spectacular), Parque Tayrona (a UK paper just named it like 2 weeks ago the second most beautiful beach on earth), Bogota (stick to the north part of the city), and your vacation will be awesome. Cartagena is by far the most romantic city in South America. Major investments are changing the city, like for example a Trump building, a new Marriot, as well as many others. Islas del Rosario, locatated at about a 25 minute boat ride will take you to a paradise. On the other hand, Parque Tayrona, which according to a UK newspaper is the 2nd prettiest beach on earth is amazing. You can either backpack, camp, or stay in a luxury hotel. It is amazing and it has the highest mountain on earth touching the sea. Diving is beautiful. Bogota, is the opposite. It is located 2600 meters above sea level. It is quite a Cosmopolitan city filled with clubs and fancy restaurants. Stick to the north part of the city.

You will love Colombia. The friendliest people in the world. Bogota is awesome. It is a modern city (about 8 million people now) with everything you can think of to do. Yet, at a stop light there might be a BMW in one lane and a mule and cart next to it. Cartagena is worth a visit. lots of history and an amazing fort. Also, if you want to get off the beaten path, go to Villa de Levya. It's about 3 hours, by bus, West of Bogota. Built in the 1500's and it appears in some areas, that time stopped in the 1600's. I've traveled all over Colombia in this last year and was welcomed every where I went. You won't want to come home.

I'm mexican I visited Colombia 10 years ago, and did not like it, you will find it even more uncivilized (is that even a word?) than me, being european. I think people is not educated and yes a lot of them are nice but is nice enough?. I found a lack of order at the airport, the supermarket, etc, it might have changed. The colombian friend I was with told me to be careful because they used to steal passports at the airport. Oh! and it was the first time someone went through my suitcase, underwear and all, back when 9/11 security measures weren't in place.... I felt abused. Didn't like it, sorry.

I would definitely recommend Cartagena, San Andres y Providencia and Bogota. There are many places to go in colombia but I dont know how long you are going for so I'm just going to suggest those places for now.
The guy on top of me gave a great suggestion about bogota. STay to the north, check La Candelaria and Zona Rosa in Bogota. Have a good time!
