We may get shaken up a bit, maybe even lose some lives, but it will only come to an end if man causes it to end. Here is a little background on the Mayan people and their predictions.
The Mayan Indians regard their beliefs as both a science and a religion. Their discoveries are not done in a lab but rather by tapping into the cosmos via the mind. Through the extensive use of meditation, they are able to discover and track planetary movements as well as space anomalies such as black holes. They used this information to construct a calendar so accurate that no present day calendar can rival its accuracy. They also use this information to predict future events.
According to some Mayans, this date marks the end of the long count of their calendar; Set to end on a winter solstice (12-21-12). On this date, our Solar system will be center aligned , in the Milky Way, ninety degrees relative to the black hole, at its center. Our sun will be centered in a position called "The Tree of Life", as it does every 25,800 years. We will have exited the forth dimension and entered the fifth dimension. This date also marks the end of the Mayan "Great Cycle" of the long count, which is equivalent to 5125 years. We exit the age of Pisces and enter the age of Aquarius.
In this position, unusually violent sun spot activity will cause a pole shift. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods will run ramped. Significant loss of life will occur. Earths magnetic field will temporarily collapse. Humans will be exposed to a cosmic energy that will facilitate enlightenment. In this state of higher consciousness, we will recognize that all matter, plant, animal, mineral are bound as one. This realization will mark the end of wars for a time. People will be able to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy) like only the most enlightened can.
The date marks a goal to be reached. Evil forces will make every effort to keep humanity from reaching the date. These evil forces are those entrenched in the third dimension, in the Material world. They have no desire to leave this age and wish to continue exploiting and endangering all life for material gain.
Wars just prior to this date could be most devastating, with a loss of as much as 2/3 of our population anticipated. The resulting man made environmental damage could make life inhospitable for those who survive.
Humans have freewill, Man's future is not set yet, nor predictable:

I think its just the end of the Mayan calendar. A cosmic full circle. Once around the sun is measured as a year. The Mayans could, astronomically speaking, measure somewhat more than a year and their calendar is based on that. So on that date, I believe its time to reset their calendar. I could be wrong and a black hole open somewhere under Milwaukee and swallow the entire galaxy. We will see.
Apparently not everyone knows where this prediction comes from. The mayan calendar is accurate for thousands of years and on the mentioned date in 2012 the calendar ends abruptly. Im thinking there may be mention in their lore of the earth ending or a new beginning or something like that that leads many to think that the world will indeed end on that date. Many newagers believe that the earth will transform, that there will be some sort of cosmic shift and we will all become, or many of us will transcend into enlightened beings. I will be very worried if a comet or asteroid heads our direction around that time period. I still think it is just a calendar reset. This is not, however, some psychic, or gloom and doom prophet prediction like we usually have that never come true.

No. The world was supposed to have ended at least a dozen times by now. It keeps on going. Don't worry and don't let alarmists get under your skin with their propaganda. I remember back in the 80's when the world was supposed to end on a certain day - some people were totally FREAKING out! The day came and went, just like every other day. Kind of a let down after expecting world obliviation, but good that we're still here and we will remain that way.

The planets being in a right away line happens incredibly frequently on a relative scale, and the image voltaic device aligns with the Milky way two times a year. no person, not even the main smart scientists can are waiting for whilst the poles will change. The poles do not change very frequently in any respect.

Nobody except the un-inform say that the world will end in 2012. What is said that a new era will come about.

The end of the world as we know it. There will be a transition from this system to another, new system. Christians have no fear of the end of the world because it is the time That Jesus Christ comes back again to put his enemies under his feet. God will put an end to evil people bringing distruction to the earth. It is a time Christians look forward to.
*The 5th chapter of 1 Thessalonians(the Holy Bible)deals with the fate of the earth, but from God's point of view. Unlike the pessimisim of the secular prophets, there is a strong hope amid the darkness of judgment predicted. In the closing verses of chapter 4, dealing with the second coming(or Parousia) of Christ, we learn that Christians are not waiting for the judgments and wrath of God but for the coming of the Son of God, either by their own death or when He breaks into time.
As for the times and the seasons-**The phrase "times and dates" indicates that the apostle Paul is coming to grips with the question of the time of the Lord's return. All of us seem to want to circle a date on the calendar, but Paul taught the Thessalonians that they did not need to know the precise date. "Now , brothers, about times and dates," he said, "we do not need to write to you"(5:1).
The end of the world in the Bible's point of view is referred to as -the Day of the Lord- ***The first characteristic of the Day of the Lord, said Paul to the Thessalonians, is that 'it will come stealthily'. It will come "like a thief in the night"(v.2). Jesus, in Matthew 24:44 adds a clear and unmistakable warning to be watchful and ready, "because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." Scriptrue teaches that the Day of the Lord will begin with the removal of God's people.
This information seems to conclude that no precise date will be predicted and that those people who do predict the end of the world are false prophets.

Let predictions remain predictions. They can never tell the future...read them...forget them! Its so silly to think that the future can be told. Ask the person who told you this whether he knows when he'll die...lolss! Chill...the world will remain as it is, unless we senseless humans decide to start a war against each other & end up this world.
