my guess is that you formatted the hard drive using an old Dos or Windows version of Fdisk, didn't you?

When you installed from the CD, it erased most of the tabling information associated with the Fat32 that your windows installation used but didn't get the small 8MB partition that windows added to perform its install from. This portion contains information anathema to your ext3 boot install. This guy had the same problem:

Since you just started this whole process, my suggestion is that instead of formatting with the windows tool or using the "fast format" option you probably started with and make sure you delete all partitions and then do a reformat of the entire drive.

Barring that, I suggest you choose a friendlier installation tool for your first Linux. Fedora core 6 and the anaconda installer actually look for and offer a fix for this very problem before you finish a lengthy install.

Good luck.

properly the sixty 4 bit has no longer something to do with it. I run x86 on my sixty 4 bit AMD CPU. something is tousled which comprise your boot loader. that's what Grub is. Sorry I dont fairly understand the thank you to repair it, yet i could advise for a common time linux person, while you're a common time it fairly is, try utilising debian or SUSE. they are plenty much less puzzling than ubuntu. yet another solid distribution is Fedora center. solid luck.
