my cat is a mostly outdoor cat except in the winter(which is now!) and he got sprayed by a skunk. could you please tell me how to get rid of it without forcing my cat to take a bath?

P.S. my cat has NEVER had a bath and he can't handle even getting sprayed by water or anything. There are alot of different formulas for getting rid of the odor but they all need water for rinsing.

I'm a pet groomer and I have tried all of the home remedies and all of the skunk shampoos and not one of them works as effectively as Thiotrol. It has only been out for a couple of years, if that. You spritz it on comb it in and no more odor. It is wonderful. You may have to go the vet or the groomer to get it but it is well worth the trouble.
You may think that you are still smelling the odor but unfortunately the residual stench that you smell is in you own nose and on the the things that the cat has laid on since being sprayed. You can spray the things but only time will help your nose.

There is just no other way than a bath. Here's what you need.

Skunk Smell Remedy

Karyl Brandon, animal science technician at K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine, has tried several experiments to remove the skunk smell from sprayed animals. As a grooming expert, she says many of the common antidotes that people try, but fail to do the job, are tomato juice, vinegar and different types of shampoos.

Brandon recommends an easy home recipe using ingredients that can be found in most drugstores.

* One quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* One-fourth cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

* One teaspoon liquid soap

She says to begin by wetting the animal down, then apply the mixture and work it through the animal's hair. Leave the solution on three to four minutes, and finish with a tap water rinse.

Caution: Make up only as much of the de-skunking remedy as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle and store this chemical combination.

I bathe my cats regularly so they are used to it. But you will have a much harder time.

A bath is the only thing that can get rid of the skunk odor. If you can't bathe your cat, I suggest you find a pet groomer than can. They are a lot cheaper than a vet.

You could try sponging your cat with tomatoe juice short of having a bath and then rinse by just dipping your sponge in clear water until most of the tomatoe juice is gone which will neutralize the skunk odor. My cats never liked baths either but I remedied that by taking them in the shower with me and using the handheld shower spray on them very gently for the first few baths I gave them then they finally got use to it and did not mind so much after that, you can also put your cat in a pillowcase with his/her head out of the opening this will stop you and the cat from getting hurt this works too. You can also sponge the cat down with Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in some water not to dilute though Good Luck !

Are you sure she was sprayed by a skunk? - If you don't get your cats anal glands cleaned at least once in their life it can sure smell like they was sprayed by a skunk - If not remember cats can swim and when you say they are afraid of water it is because they feel your emotions just like dogs and we humans project that fear - there are no magic potions or magic pills - you are going to have to bathe her - stay calm and your cat will stay calm - as far as not having a good vet - find one - it is your obligation as an owner to find a good doctor for your cat and your family in cases of emergencies like this one -Good Luck!

I bought something called Skunk-Off at my local pet shop. It was cheap, around 15 dollars Canadian so I didn't think it would work. To my amazement, it worked, after only one application. Try asking around pet stores to see if they have it. It's just a spray that you spray on, you can use a damp cloth to wipe it off after it sits for about 20 minutes.

We ran into that with a kitty some years ago. What we did was wash him in tomato juice, then let him groom himself clean and dry. It seemed to work- but it was hard!
