During a self protection program at school, the officer told the kids about Polly Klaus and other children who have been objucted from their bedrooms. Every since, my otherwise normal eleven year old son is terrified to go to sleep in his room. He has tried sleeping with his bible, lights on, music, etc. We have discussed this with him endlessly, explaining that he is safe in our house. We find him on our floor or his younger sister's floor every morning.

By him one of those air horns.. Tell him the minute that IF someone comes in his room to blow it and you will come running with a batt. Make sure he sees that you have a bat.

See it you can buy him an extra lock(s) for his window. Have him see you or help you put it on. Or one of thoses alarms that go off when you open the window, You can get them at any hard wear shop or wal mart. Is he on the second floor.? Is there a way for any one to climb up.? Polly was taken from a first floor room.

You might not be able to ease his mind with your telling him that him getting taken away but you might be able to ease it with seeing how protected he is in the house.

Also tell him that even if/when his room is very secure a robber will not come into a house with people in it. Cause the robber will make noise and the people will hear and might call the cops or hurt him.

And even if his room is very secure a kidnapper will NOT come in from the front room cause of also making noise and not wanting to wake up the parents.

Kidnappers and robber are stupid ( that might help him) and make a lot of noise. So every one will hear them

Putting him in charge (to an extent) of household safety is a great idea. It helps him feel empowered to keep himself and the ones he loves safe.

You can also explain to him that, when a child gets kidnapped from their own room, it's big news because it happens so rarely. You can tell him that it happened a long way away (if indeed it did) and that there is almost no chance that it will happen to him.

Fears like this are very, very real to children and can be hard to eliminate. Time does wonders! Good luck!

Uh.... I definately don't think discussing this with your pediatrician makes any sense....

However, you could install locks on his bedroom window that he is able to open from the inside. Show him how to lock and unlock them in case of fire.
You could keep a baby monitor in his bedroom and the other half in yours and let him know that if he needs you, you'll be able to hear him. Or purchase a set of Walkie Talkies for $20

You could simply bunk him with his sister, if that makes him feel better. I mean, he has a valid fear and is on his toe's so to speak....which will definately keep him safer. Even Polly Klaus's family had no reason to doubt that their daughter wasn't safe in her own home....so don't invalidate his fear.

I think at this point it's best to ask him what he feels he wants to do to make him feel safer.... Involve him so he can be proactive since that's obviously what he's doing already, which is great!

Have him help install the window locks, etc.... and if he still wants to sleep with Mom and Dad or sister off and on for a while it certainly isn't a big issue......

Your big issue is helping your son empower himself to feel safe.
:o)

I hate those school programs designed for "self protection"...it seems more like they scare the kids more than help them. Our oldest had fears of fire, and our middle child is currently going through tornado-fear syndrome.

His problem is that he feels helpless, and is scared he will loose his little sister.

There are two things you could do....enroll both of your children in a self-defense class... one similar to "self defense for women".

Secondly, you could put your son in charge of night time safety (at least until he's no longer scared someone will grab his sister). He could go around at night and check to make sure the doors and windows are locked.

Giving him these safety jobs just might give him a realization that he can help the family be safe.

Give him a set of walkie-talkies. Then, tell him that if he is scared or if he is in any danger, he can just radio you for help and yu can come save him!
