Bangkok, Cheng-Mai and Phuket.
Traveling in Thailand is extremely cheap. if you travel to netherland you need to pay 10 times more expensive than thailand.
Wish you a happy holiday!

Bangkok, Ayyuthaya, Sukhothai (these last two were both capitals of Thailand many hundreds of years ago, so are interesting historically), Kanchanaburi for the Bridge and the WW2 war graves (the most moving place I've ever been to), Chiang Mai is certainly worth visiting for a few days. I liked the north east around Nong Khai.

If you have the time, I suggest spending two-three weeks travelling around the north & west and then head south for a few days on a beach....head for islands such as Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta or Ko Tao for a more relaxed type of place. I had a month in the north and found that to be perfect, but I was in no rush.

If you travel around by bus, it'll be quite cheap, even if you take air-con ones...and you'll see a bit of the country as you travel. If you work your way slowly north, you can get overnight trains from both Chiang Mai and Nong Khai to Bangkok. At the end, you could fly back to Bangkok.

If you don't like congestion and pollution, I would recommend skipping Bangkok. There are many oppurtunities to shop around other part of Thailand.
Chiang Mai is one of them. The weather in Chiang Mai is pleasant and the food is one of the best, IMO. Here, you can buy many ethnic goods and shop around the night market for tourist goods.
Then of course, there's the beaches that you MUST see. I think the beaches on Phi Phi Islands are one of the most beautiful in the world. This is where the movie "The Beach" with Leo DiC. took place, so you can get an idea of how scenic it is.
Kanchanaburi is a good recomendation too. There's a waterfall you can hike up to that 7 tiers tall. On the 5th tier, there are smooth rock where you can climb and slide down into a deep pool of cool water. The only down side of this is that there's fishes that nip at you in the water. If you don't mind, Kanchanaburi can be very relaxing.

If it is your first trip to Thailand, then you should do the major cities first and then on other visits some of the smaller cities. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket are a must on your first visit. If you love the beach, then stay at least 5 nights in Phuket, 3 nights in Chiang Mai and 5-7 nights in Bangkok.

If you are going to Thailand and love shopping , the must visit city is obviously Bangkok. It has super cheap stuff there. But i dont think you should spend too many days there as it's often crowded and congested. Maybe around three days would be enough and it could get pretty warm there.

Bangkok, purely for shopping, 3-4 days is normally enough, then head north to Chiang Mia. Treks galore Or maybe Mae Hong Son to soak up some Thai culture! I spent 3 weeks their last October and didn't want to leave, its so relaxed!
Get a cheap flight back to Bangkok and head south for the beaches, Phuket is excellent for everything, avoid Patong if your not into partying or girlie bars or the other option is to visit Ko Phi Phi most places are now back up and running now.
Hope you enjoy your trip.

since im thai, i say thailand, cus there is so much more to it, so many differen cultures, traditions, FOOD, and geography.
so. thailand.
shopping, fashion, luxury, style, metropolis, technology is BANGKOK, all the way. try the shoping complexes like emporium, paragon, or go to chatuchak its stylish funky and cheap

if you love mountains, head up to Chiang Mai (rather crowded though), Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son and go trekking, elephant riding...whitewater rafting..

beaches, beaches, beaches,
PATTAYA for the nightlife, the pubs, and the young attractive single western men.
PHUKET or KRABI or TRANG for the beauty, the serenity of the ocean, and just having fun.
HUA HIN or CHA AM for peace (the other beaches are realy crowded) and relaxation, alhtough you do find the occasional westerner lying like a dugong/whale flat on their faces getting a tan.
the average bottle of water here is only 10 Baht....which is around 23 cents.
one us dollar = 45 baht, i htink...
the rest of thailand is basically culture and landscape. try ayuddhaya for the ancient temples or sukhothai..... if you do come, i hope you have a nice time!
xx

Thailand has 78 provinces and much more cities, so it will not be easy to recommend without knowing what your preferences are. You can look at www.tourismthailand.org for the information on the country and see which are the popular cities highlighted and which ones interest you.
