The Indian National Congress (Congress)'s victory at the 2004 general election confounded forecasts of a fragile second term for the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The new ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition, led by Congress – under the premiership of former finance minister Manmohan Singh – and comprising its left-wing and regional allies, will follow broadly similar economic and foreign policies to that of the BJP. Congress has long-established pro-business and pro-market credentials, and indeed was the party that first embarked on economic liberalisation in 1991. The operational environment for foreign business in India will thus remain largely stable and benign. However, left-wing support of a Congress-led coalition government is likely to lead to a scaling back of the privatisation process. While this triggered initial fears among investors, the choice of Singh as prime minister reassured markets and will assure political and economic stability.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is a coalition of political parties in India. It is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and had 13 constituent parties at the time of its formation in 1998. The convenor of NDA is George Fernandes, and its honorary Chairman is former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Also representing the alliance are Lal Krishna Advani, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha; Jaswant Singh, who is Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha; and Charnjit Singh Atwal, who is the Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha.

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is the present ruling coalition of political parties in India. UPA was formed soon after the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. However, an informal alliance had existed prior to the elections as several of the current constituent parties had developed seat-sharing agreements in many states. Initially, the proposed name for the alliance was 'Secular Progressive Alliance'.

Its constituents include:

Indian National Congress (INC)
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK)
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK)
Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJNSP)
Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)
Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP)
Republican Party of India (Athvale) (RPI(A))
Republican Party of India (Gavai) (RPI(G))
