I wouldn't be a big fan of the placing - your knee is an odd place to get a tattoo. It'd hurt more than other places, too. Getting a tattoo over a bony area of your body is going to hurt a hell of a lot more than on a fleshy place. The aftercare isn't going to be fun, either, if you get it on your knee - you use and bend and move your knee all around, all the time in everyday life. It's going to be challenging to keep it clean and let it heal properly.
As for the design itself, the smiley face is such a widely-used symbol, it might lose some of the inate meaningfulness a tattoo usually has. Of course, it's your tattoo, your design, and it will be what you make it to be, but I'd just think hard before you get it.
All this aside, it IS your decision - best of luck with whatever you choose!

I am not sure if it has a meaning or not but it reminds me of the cover of Debbie Gibsons album Out of the Blue. She was my favorite when I was in 5th grade. I dressed up like her for haloween and drew the smiley face on my knee with the whole in the knee of my pants so everyone could see it. So that is what that would remind me of. Of course hers was just drawn on not tattooed. I would think it over a little longer before getting a tattoo like that. You might regret it. I could think of better tattoos to get personaly but to each there own. You could always get a w tattooed on each butt cheek and then when you turned cartwheels it would say wow mom wow mom wow mom!! Just kidding.

If it's going to have a meaning
it should be a meaning to you.
It's just a smile...How about this...
;-) It's a wink, a smile has been
done way too much....:-) smile
:-) or ;-) I like the wink... Seems
it would have to be pretty big for
anyone to notice. Too big will look funny.
Check with your artist about size and
placement. Your wrist may be a
better choice for a small tattoo.

It might look weird, but then who knows? It might turn out pretty cool, but I wouldn't take the risk. I don't think that there's any meaning to a smiley face plastered on a knee.

You can't ask the public, especially strangers their opinion. A tattoo is supposed to have meaning behind it and for you only. It's supposed to have meaning of life for you. For example, I have two human eyes tattooed on my lower back. Everyone asks me Why the heck would I get eyes on my lower back. Simply because my mother passed away, and she always looked out for me. So i took a picture, blew it up, and had the artist tattoo her eyes as if shes watching my back.

Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack both have smiley faces tattooed on their knees. I have no idea why. But it's kinda cute I guess. lol :-)

the only problem that i see with the tattoo on your knee is what position is the knee going to be in when tattooed? if your knee is bent, then when you straighten it, the face will be all wrinkled, and the opposite if tattooed straight (face stratches out). otherwise, to me, there is no meaning for a smiley face tattoo.

It depends on what you feel about it but my opinion is don't do it. Do you really wanna walk around with a smiley face tatooed on your knee?
