Well, the better question is why would your son put a non "genuine" version of Windows, if you already had it?
Anyways....
You should be able to do this several ways. Its essential to get back to the genuine version, with a non-validate version of windows, you cant get important update possible leaving you susceptible to viruses and other this that can make your system crash...
Since it came from dell, it should have a disk...? unless its put as a "recovery partition" some companies have done that, i think HP started it, but they ended up having to send all those people disks. If you have a windows system, paid for it on a manufactured PC, they are required to give you a disk copy.
You said on your "D:" drive. Most PC, that is you CD/DVD Rom Drive. Unless you have that partition.
If you have that partition, you should be able to click into it from My Computer. There might be an executable file to launch a recovery program.
You may try calling Dell, I hear they have outstanding customer service, not sure tho....
You may be able to launch it from the "OS Selection screen" They way to get this...
Restart/Turn On the PC... this must be done just right, pay attention....
As soon as the Bios passes (in your case, it will probably just be the screen showing the Dell Logo), but before the Windows loading screen comes, press and hold F8.
This will bring up a Selection screen with a few options. If you were running multiple Operating systems, you could chose them here, but if not, a recovery option should show IF you have that recovery partition{(D:)drive}. It may launch a recovery for you there. If not you will just be given options on how to start windows, if so, just chose "Start windows normally".
If that doesn't work...
Try Launch "System Restore" Found in the System Tools Menu or the Control Panel. This may have a restore point for a time before the other windows was installed. This depends on how recent the install was and how System Restore is set.
It is much easier if you have the disk....
If you do...
Just Pop it in and go from there, it should launch a menu, if not, click the icon in My Computer... now the Repair utility on the disk only works if it is the same of newer version. Say its windows XP, and you have a Service pack1 disc, but, you have upgraded to SP2. then it wouldn't work. You would have to delete the partition, and start back at that, from scratch. Unless you have made a Separate Partition on your hard drive for your personal files, doing this will wipe them out with windows. You should back up your personal files if this step is a must. There is a back up utility in windows that should be in the System Tools, or you can get a 3rd party program to do this. If you need a program, you can but one, check around, or get one for free from: FreewareFiles.com. If you have only a few item, say some documents, and maybe a few pics, nothing too spacious, then maybe just burn them to a CD, or if you have a capability, a DVD(holds more). Also, there are some On-line File Hosting Places, Like XDrive(xdrive.com) which is now through AOL.
If there is another way to do this, i didn't know how. But i have had to reinstall windows many times, and it can be a hassle... I've learned my lesson, and now i partition, but only advanced user should do such things.
Try these at your on risk!
If you are at all unsure at any point in these steps, Definitely give Dell or Microsoft a call, I'm sure they may have answers as well...
And be more careful when messing around with you PC, one slip, and its gone....

your best bet is using the built-in System Restore from Dell, NOT the one built-in in the Windows itself, unless if Dell system comes with set of CD of System Restore, then use it. This will format your computer and start everything brand new again, just like you just brought it home. Most computers lately have built-in software System Restoration on D: drive (a partitioned drive from C:). Dell used to come with a set of CD, but i'm not sure if they still have them with new computers or not.
