Of course not, like any other animal they have 1. But they are very lucky, very resilient and remarkably good at getting out of sticky situations. Hence the phrase. The number of lives probably comes from the cat of 9 tails which was a kind of whip used aboard ships, which incidentally is were the saying "not enough room to swing a cat" comes from.

Well the whole 9 life thing is a myth. Cats are living things such as humans.

I think that saying is pretty old. Basically, a cat seems to get h/her self into things alot because of curiosity. Have you heard the saying "Curiosity killed the cat" ? Same thing only the killed cat is probably on his ninth life. :)

That is so fake.I had a cat and it died when I was six years old, and I was waiting for him to come alive again, but he never came back. My auntie had a cat and it got ranned over by car, it got back up but then it died so no cats dose not have nine lives. :)

That's a myth. It has "stuck" through the years because some cats can go through almost ANYTHING and live.

I think it just means cats have narrow escapes from situations which seem perilous to us. It was never meant literally except in cartoons.
