I am suffering from migraine as it is but in the last few weeks I keep having a dull headache either straight away after waking up or it appears between 4-5pm. The pain is on the right hand side on top of my head. It's not too painful but it is there so I'll be distracted. Sometimes it'll get worse, sometimes it just stays the same. I had a scan last year (due to daily headaches then) but they couldn't find anything wrong. I don't want to take tablets every day and I am just miserable because of it because I never know how bad it's gonna get. I don't need glasses, that was ruled out straight away. Anybody else out there who suffers and could give me some advise.

i dont know if this is relavent to you, but when i get persistent headaches it's usualy down to being dehydrated (thats why you get a hangover after a skinfull). if your urine(sorry) is 'strong' that indicates being dehydrated. i've recently been diagnosed as diabettic and get a headache if my blood sugar is up. ask at your chemist if they could do a blood sugar test for you to rule this out. good luck, i suffered for years untill i 'put it together'.

I'm wondering if you could be suffering from a form of cluster headaches. You've said that your headaches are not too painful and normally cluster headaches are EXTREMELY painful; they are far worse than migraines. But the way that you have described the pattern of them sounds similar.

I suffered from cluster headaches and when I did have them, I did a little bit of research, and what I found out was:

They are generally caused by stress. You need to examine areas in your life which may be cauing you stress and deal with them as necessary, because the headaches will not go away by themselves. If you need to do something as drastic as changing jobs in order to deal with the problem, then that's what needs to happen.

That said, they can often be worse at certain times of the year, and this is mainly to do with the seasons changing. I don't know where you live, but if you're in the UK or any other part of the world which experiences a degree of seasonal change, you may find that now that it's getting a little warmer, this is what has triggered it. They might just stop by themselves once the weather settles.

In terms of taking tablets to deal with them, I never used to bother. I didn't want to take anything on a daily basis as a precaution, and if you wait until the headache has actually started to take a painkiller, then by the time the painkiller kicks in the headache is already a lot better all by itself. I just used to suffer the pain and bang my head against a brick wall as and when necessary.

Also, the reason why they are called "cluster headaches" is because they appear in clusters. You may have one every day for a few weeks and then they will just go away by themselves. But then you'll get another "cluster" a few months later.

So, I guess the short story is that I can't really give you any advice. I don't suffer from them at the moment, but from what I've been told by my doctor and what I have read online, this is just luck and I should be prepared for them to return at any moment. But if you think this sounds like what you're going through then just google "cluster headaches" and see if what comes up sounds like what you have.

Gosh you sound a bit like me! I ended up in hospital for a week from a headache, and they did all the scans and couldn't find anything either.

I am a migraine sufferer, and all I can say is that they have told me that it can be hereditary. My mother and grandmother all suffered the same.

I do take a medication, which I take when I feel the onset of a bad headache or migraine. It isn't ideal, but with little else to be done, I feel like it is the only solution.

Also make sure you get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, and eliminate any stress you might have in your life (Ha! Ha! Easier said than done!)

Hope this helps.

I sympathise!

It is not normal to have headaches on a daily basis. Two most common reasons are dehydration and high blood pressure. It would be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP to go through a detailed history as there are so many other causes. It is not a good idea to take too many Co codamol tablets without a diagnosis. . Good luck.

You could just be dehydrated - like on a hot day, make sure you drink lots of water! It could also have something to do with the weather - certain weather patterns give me headaches too. Or it could even be a hand cream that you're using - with a really strong smell. My teacher uses a really strong perfumed cream that gives even me headaches from standing far away and she wears it every day.

Any headache you have every day or even more often needs to be medically evaluated. If one doctor blows you off, find another until you get a good diagnosis. A consult with a neurologist is also a good idea.

If you take painkillers every day then they will cause headaches.
Talk to your doctor, find out if these are migraines as you may need preventative medication.

Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or neck. Headaches can be
caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more
serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information
