It's such a hard question; he succeed mostly in everything he did; probably the sculpture stuff is the most known...Anyway , I think he is significant because of who he was more than what he did; he represents the tipical renaissance man , who look in Nature for inspiration; I found that really amaizing, how can you learn so much just by looking around you, and being willing to be teach by the surrounding nature ?... that's probably the best teacher for everything.
I don't know, it's amazing how the little stuff as watching a bird flying can teach so much; and it's even more amaizing how a man can be so humble to learn from it.

It depends what you mean by significant. Significant to the artist, contemporary society, us? You could look at the significance of his work also in the sense of the significance it has in the vaious fields you have mentioned.

Sorry to be so specific but in Art History we have to be very careful to be clear about these things.

I've studied da Vinci for some years now and have handled some of his original works personally and off the top of my head I'll give you a quick run down of what I believe to be the most significant aspects of the various fields and whether this relates to antiquity or modern day thought.

Ok lets start with art and his paintings. We have very few of his works to go by as some have not survived from antiquity, others have been left uncompleted and only a couple survive to a high level of finish. In the field of art the significance of da Vinci lies in the innovative techniques that he used and were copied by other artists. He was famous within his own lifetime and was the first artist to have his work collected just because he had painted it. (I refer here to Isabella d'Este prolific art collecter of the Renaissance).

Leonardo's scientific and anatomical drawings and experiments were probably the most significant works that he accomplished. He made monumental discoveries but unfortunately never thought he'd done enough work or was unsure of himself and didn't publish. Many of his discoveries went unnoticed for decades and were re discovered if you like by others. His anatomical drawings were unlike anything that had preceeded them and they are still used today by the medical profession.

Hope these few words are along the right lines and have given you some food for thought.

Good Luck
