If you're using spinning gear, I recommend using no more than 6lb test (fluorocarbon) and red octopus hooks (Gamakatsu) for fishing egg sacs. Tie on a leader of 3ft using a good ball bearing swivel. Place your split shot above the swivel - cast quartering upstream and dead drift downstream, make sure you are "ticking" off the bottom, if not, add more shot, if you keep getting hung-up, take off some shot.
Flies can be fished in the same manner on a spinning rod.

Using a fly rod (7or 8 wt) : 3x or 4x fluorocarbon tippet, fish the flys
or nymphs the same way you would fishing for trout (usually
dead drifted w/ an indicator). You can also swing woolly-boogers
(black/dark olive work well) quartering across and down stream,
most hits (vicious ! ) will come on the "swing".

When spinning I use a noodIe rod and drift egg-sacs

when fly fishing I use ersatz egg patterns, nuclear eggs (yarn flys)
nymphs and wooly boogers

Steelhead don't come in very easy, you need to take your time fighting them. If need be, you may have to chase them downstream. One thing I've learned: if they want to run upstream: let them, it tires them out quicker, and bringing them in is easier.

Steelheading takes a lot of repetitive casts and time. It took my wife 2 years of fishing to land 1, many hits but landing can be different story. This fall she caught 3 in 1 day and I got skunked. Hang in there it will happen.

Stay warm and dry!Float spawn (fresh preferably) or nymphs under a float with enough weight to just tick bottom. On warmer days closer to spring crank baits(the brighter the better) fished slowly and methodically through the deeper holes aggravates them to hit.Use a good rod and reel with about 8lb.test should work fine.Remember they do not freeze well so only keep what you want to eat THAT day and release the rest.Have fun and KEEP FISHING

Use Sportfisher 20 lb test and #4 gold aberdeen hook suspending a 1 1/2" - 2" chub minner under a cork float. Cast upstream and hang on for dear life. A good hi speed reel will help land them. I suggest a Zebco 202.

Dynamite usually works good when fishing.
