It might be what's called "flash modeling," which lets you see what the actual effect of the flash lighting is going to be. The flash just flashes repeatedly without taking a picture. This feature is available on my Nikon SB-800, foir instance.

You could use Expodisc White Balance Filter to corrections flashlight, shutter speeds and apertures,etc,before they take the models,this filter that could buy from Cathay Photo Stores,it cost cheaper than others.

They must be taking proof shots to check the lighting.
