I just knew that somewhere in the answers given, some macrocephalous idiot would suggest that this question is racist. How can keeping a check on people coming in to this country be anything but sound common sense? To declare a total amnesty on all asylum seekers without even checking their reasons for wanting to come here in the first place would not only be lunacy beyond belief, it would be an absolute gift to terrorists. How on Earth can self preservation possibly be racist?.I know there are countless thousands of British people of all faiths, colours and creeds ,many among my closest friends ,who agree with me.

There should be stricter regulations actually, only allowing people here where there is a sufficiant skills shortage ie doctors, dentists, we never know the full background of each person applying, it may also help to get a fuller idea if we knew how many immigrants are being accepted by our european buddies. It's not a racist question just a common sense question regarding how many other people we can cater for before our infrastructure crumbles and the economy suffers, for instance here in my city we are taking trained Police off the streets and replacing with less experienced community support officers, but last year here we spent over £100k on translators for the police regarding issues with the 98 different nationalities we have in this city, NOW that's the salary for 3 fully trained police officers? It's a tough topic, the government say more people = more tax paid but who knows?

Why is this question racist?? An amnesty would not work because how would you get the details too the people that could use it they almost all don't speak English so how?

It's time for the overpaid power mad politicians to stop sitting in their ivory towers and deal with the issues that their pathetic immigration polices have caused.

Britain is quite rightly a melting pot for all people as long as they want to contribute to our society then no problem but letting people who are criminals and drug addicts into our country well I despair the sooner we get a stronger government the better!!

No way, it would be tolerable if there was only a few, but there are thousands and that just an estimated guess by the establishment, so in reality ther are even more. If you came here as an illegal immigrant, then you should expect the consequences of it. Might make more sense to put a stop to all immigration until we put our house in order.

Asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants. They are people in need. To get permission to stay they have to show they are at risk of being killed if they return. If they can't show that, they can't stay. So theres no need for an amnesty.
There is a need for each country to be fair and help our fellow human beings who are victioms of war or political unrest.
Where would we go if we were in their shoes? It happened in Yugoslavia for gods sake, it can happen anywhere.
I have no problem with genuine asylum seekers. Most of the ones I've met are in shock and mourning, and just want the political situation in their country fixed so they can go home.

No. There should be a total block on them until this government can work out how many there actually are in the UK.
