I am sending my dad to visit his sister in Australia (Nr Brisbane) as his 60th bday prezzie. His bday is September so will give him ticket then, so I wanted to know how long (max) it would take to get his passport and visa sorted - as I cannot think of a way of getting him a passport beforehand - I wanted him to go in November. Would this be pushing it?

I just read that back - did it make sense to you? :)

Thanks Strudders, I had forgotten about the new interviews - his bday is September 1st and the date to fly can be flexible

Thanks Louise, my mum has just given £1500 to me and my sister from the small amount she received from the sale of her mums house - long story - so we decided to send him between us......the rest of it will be spent on a new carpet! Exciting eh!?

It makes sense.

I assume he does not have a passport at the moment. That being the case, new rules come in to effect on 1st April and he will have to be interviewed before he can get a first passport...you can't just fill out a form and send it off. By September, things may have calmed down a bit (and the summer holiday rush will be over) but the expectation is that the new process will add a lot of delay to first time applicants.

Might be worth inventing some reason and trying to get a passport BEFORE then if you can...without letting your dad know why you really want him to have one but if you can't come up with anything, keep tabs on what happens post-April.

If his birthday is at the beginning of Sept / you want him to fly at the end of Nov, it may be possible, but if you only have 4-5 weeks, you could be pushing it.

Getting an Aussie visa should be quick but contact the visa sections at Travcour (in London) or Trailfinders (call the Kensington High St, London office) to ask...they'll have more accurate info on that.

Good luck.

Has you dad had a passport before, if so you/he will have to send that with the application form and it should only take a max of 2 weeks, if he hasn't had one before then it takes about 4 weeks, as long as you pay a bit extra to get it so fast, or you could just take your dad to your nearest passport office and get it done there and then, his travellers visa will be put on electronically via the travel agent you book you ticket with, all they do is type your passport number into the computer and there you have it, I assumed it was a piece of paper but its done electronically which is so much better as your not having to carry extra piece of documentation round with you, were going to Australia in 4 weeks and can't wait and I so hope your dad has a holiday of a lifetime when he goes, good luck and hope its great.

The passport will be no problem, I was advised that it would take 3 weeks to process, longer during busy periods, but I got ours back in less than a week. This was for passport renewals though! If he hasnt had a passport before it will take longer because I think he will need an interview, but I'm sure he will still have plenty of time to apply.

I have not been to Australia but I understand you can apply for a visitors visa online and it only takes a couple of days for them to authorise your application. (providing they are willing to grant it)

I hope he enjoys the trip- what a lucky Dad he is!!
