If you really think you can do them yourself, definitely go to www.irs.gov and explore the free filing options. They even have a small querstionnaire to complete to identify the best service to use, given your circumstances. Be aware, though, that free filing often extends only to federal returns. You often have to pay for state. However, I have never paid more than $20 to file both federal and state.

Do not discount either H & R Block or a local tax pro (make sure they are either a CPA or an Enrolled Agent). There are lots of tax deductions out there and no box or online program can cover every situation.

Taxact is only 15.95 for both state and federal together. I have used it for the past 2 years and love it. My favorite bit is that if you used it last year, you don't have to fill in all of the personal info again and it imports from last years return. It's a cinch.

Just go to www.irs.gov and click on the e-file option. It will take you to an entire listing of sites, many of which are free if your income qualifies. Turbo-Tax is a good one. With most of them, all you have to do is follow the prompts.
