I was lieing in bed the other day asleep and I stretched out my leg. All of sudden I woke up with horrific pain in my. It felt like it was tensing up and geting harder and harder. It felt as if someone was squeezing it as hard as possible. My partner held it to try and comfort me and after about 30 secs she said it almost felt like blood was rushing back into it and it started to loosen off. I get a similar feeling in my jaw sometims but no where near the same pain. After it happened i could not walk or put ne weight on my leg until next day and even then it was very sore and still is now on day 2. Does anyone know what this is or if its something i should check out with a docter? I had been to the gym that day as well if it helps and i do go every other day. My legs are ver muscular as well. thankyou in advance

This happens to me all the time in my legs and feet when I lay down, I believe what you are referring to is a 'charlie horse'. Immediately when you begin to feel the muscles tensing up, move/flex them...You may think it will be painful but it will stop the pain almost immediately. Hope this helps.

Hi Almight, Have you heard the saying, I got a Charley Horse. That's what this is. It's really a muscle spasm. I like you 6 months ago woke up and stretched my legs and my right leg felt like a vice was squeezing the life out of my leg. It to got very hard and tensed up. It hurt so much i had tears rolling from by eyes. I try to straight my leg and it got tighter and harder. Then i just started yelling. I grab my leg and started rubbing it sort of hard for about 3 minutes. I started to feel it lighting up and kept rubbing it. I to could not put weight on my right leg either. The next day i could walk but it was so sore it hurt from the soreness. It's from over working your muscle. When you went to bed and try to relax you got a Charley Horse that would not stop for a little bit. Try not to over do in your gym workout, and maybe this will not happen again. At least i hope i never have to go threw that again. I think i would rather be shot in the head. Those Charley Horses are very painful. People who has not expience a Charley Horse you have no ideal how much they hurt. A Friend Who Knows.

It does sound like a muscle spasm, and yes, they can be incredibly painful and can cause tenderness for a day or two afterward Sometimes, as strange as it sounds, if you point your big toe towards your knee, it will help to stop or ease the cramp. If you or your partner can massage the area, that will also help. My doctor said that if you've really over-used the muscles, beyond what they're accustomed to, that can help to bring them on. It could also be that you're dehydrated and need to drink more water or something like Gatorade, which will replenish your electrolytes. If you are low on potassium, that could be a factor. Try eating more bananas or taking a supplement. My doctor had me take potassium and magnesium and it took care of the problem. (This can sometimes mean that you need calcium, but that's more likely during pregnancy.)
Good luck. If it continues, you should discuss it with your doctor.

Sounds like leg cramps and sometimes u can flex and avoid it too, i think a lot of people get that. Maybe a temporary lack of blood and oxygen flow to the muscle? then pain as the muscle contracts? rubbing it seems to work for me. I don't seem to get it since i drink more water and walk for 30 mins gentle 3 times a week now. Forgot to say maybe a circulation problem? Aspirin is good for thinning the blood and increasing general circulation but ask the doc first of course.

Yes, move your feet up and down as though on a treadle. The blood is pumped by the calf muscles as well as the heart and moving your feet will put the calf pump in action and circulate blood to the cramp area.

yes it sounds like muscle spasm. I get them if I dont drink enough water and it can take a couple of days for the pain to go away.
