Well....
Over the years, Marantz has been the good amp for Bass/Midrange and has a good "reserve" of power......
Yamaha has been designed more for High Frequency response.
So.....what do you like in YOUR sound? More BASS or More Hi Frequency??
I like both.....
HOWEVER......The Yamaha has more power. 120W compared to the 90W in the Marantz....(conservative, remember the word "headroom")
Does it matter? Only if you have a STADIUM-sized room.
Cost - Marantz wins there.
Features -- Both Win there.
Now I know what you're up against.....
So....this is what we do.
You purchase the Yamaha.....UNLESS you want a $300 TOY that you can't afford to get BECAUSE YOU GOT THE YAMAHA!!
Like the Toshiba HD-DVD for $400 (HDA2)
You get what I mean by this?
Aw hell....Heads Yamaha, Tails Marantz
Believe me, this will DECIDE better than the two of us.....
And I'll bet you'll keep flipping that coin until "the one you REALLY want" Wins!
That's how I make my decisions when it's really really tight......

I'm glad to see you're really thinking this though, chief...It's pretty close, but what you're really paying for with the Yamaha is about a million DSP modes (Digital Surround Processing)...I find a person only needs "Dolby Digital", "DTS" and "5-channel Stereo"...I don't really get exited about 10 different "Stadium" settings...But that's just me.
Also Yamaha gives you GREAT power supplies for the FRONT 2 channels, but then SKIMPS on the center and rear...Of course most receivers do this, but I prefer equal power on 5 or 6 identical speakers so I can leave all the speaker volume levels at ZERO...This allows the play back of the movie soundtrack EXACTLY the way it was recorded in the studio.
I'm not sure how the Marantz lays out it's amplifier section, but the ONLY receivers I've ever had the opportunity to listen to that had IDENTICAL power supplies on EACH channel, were the DENON brand...Not trying to muck up the decision making process, just being honest...Here's a link to Denon's receivers: http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/AVReceivers.asp
But seriously, if you had to choose between Yamaha and Marantz, I'd pick the Marantz...But like we've said a MILLION times already, go and LISTEN to both models and see the difference for yourself...If YOU can't hear a difference, then get the CHEAPER one...Always a pleasure, "Crazy Danes".

Marantz is made by Denon, which is considered to be about the best receiver you can buy (within reason), so I vote for the Marantz. However, be aware these receivers are quite complex to set up & use, so ifyou are not a "techie", you might want to go with a Japanese brand. They are easier to set up & use.
BTW, Onkyo is better than Yamaha as well.

Either one is a good receiver. Just choose the one with the looks and features that you most want...

Please give "thumbs up" ratings to good answers. This
definitely encourages more worthwhile answers. Why?
Because each one given to a best answer means 1
additional point -up to 50 more! It is fun to receive 10
points for a best answer, but imagine how much happier
you'd feel to receive 60 points for a best answer?

When you look at the specs, they are almost the same. More power and cleaner power makes the Yamaha the better choice in my opinion, but opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, LOL.
