I just consider death to be like the power being permantly turned off much like how a machine can be turned off.

It's not my personal belief but the idea doesn't bother me. If our consciousness is only the product of a series of chemical reactions and we cease to 'be' when we die, then that's just the way it is. In my view it only means that the decisions we make while we are living become more important, because then they are the only thing that we have and the only chance we get.
That's a good point from Blakenwit... it's also something I personally believe and an idea I like. Even though I think it's probable there is some sort of afterlife for the spirit part of people, I like the connection to nature that exists on a physical level. I was always a hippie kid. Watch the Lion King :)
Just thought of something that might help. I've never been afraid of anything that might happen when we die because I feel like whatever it is it's natural and the way things are supposed to be. If you can think of it like that it might help you get over being afraid.

Hi i think it would be scary to think when your dead that's it blackness no more consciousness.I think allot of people are frightened of this but are not so willing to talk about it . Ive been exploring the spiritual dimension through books mediums phycics for the last 19 years and id like to say There definitely is more than we can see and perceive in this world ,it would be ignorant to deny all the weird phenomena that happens IE children with memories of previous lIves, near death experiences ,out of body experiences, ghosts, etc etc Unfortunately i cant give you proof of an afterlife because its your personal journey that opens your mind to these things . Through my search ive come to the conclusion id rather be aware of this afterlife and find out what to expect so i can arrive when the time comes with a little knowledge that will elevate me above complete denial of its existence. I personally do not want to be reincarnated so i read and prepare myself so when i do cross i will be aware of whats happening to me. If as you say it is just dark the end of my consciousness and soul,Ive lost nothing but if as i believe there is an afterlife i will be prepared.

I used to feel like you do and it did scare me the thought of not being here any more. Since becoming a spiritualist medium I know that everyone, whether they have sinned or not, goes to a place called spirit world, or Heaven as some like to call it. I know because I have been given the wonderful gift of being able to communicate with the spirits who have passed over. It is only the earthly body that dies, the outer casing to the soul or spirit, but the spirit lives on and in most cases reincarnates into another life. Not sure I want another life though - its a b..ch sometimes!!!!

I actually have panic attacks on a regular basis thanks to this line of thinking. It also frightens me to think of what it was like before I was born. I couldn't feel anything. I don't want to go back to being nothing at all! I guess I don't have a way of looking at it in terms of visualizations. I cannot fathom how death feels...it probably doesn't feel like anything at all. The only way I can stand it is to distract myself and pretend like I'll never have to worry about it. Everytime I try to imagine it, I just feel this sudden rush of fear and nausea. My advice: look up reincarnation. I don't really believe it's a sure thing, but it's interesting and will help take your mind off "the end".

I have experienced things that prove to me beyond the slightest hint of a shadow of a thought of a doubt that the self continues after death.
do I know every detail of what will happen after this body dies? no.
do I know that I will continue to exist? yes. without a doubt.
hell in some ways the bizzarest "what if I was really just crazy" then well, I'd be happy with that, because it would basically mean that alot of really bad stuff wasn't real and the world was alot simple and alot happier a place.

It is scary. And theres no use discussing it b/c all we can do is theorize. I stay away from religions and the Bible and propaganda. I am more spiritual and believe we are all connected by energy and thought- watch the Secret and What the Bleep do We Know...quantum physics makes MUCH more sense to me than "He is your all mighty savior! Now pay this church lots of money and obey your husband!!!!" Grrr. Yeah, focus less on death and more about making your life count- envision your funeral- what would you want people to say about you? What do you want to leave behind in this world? Take care of those things and my friend, your fears will vanish! :) Take good care.

There really isn't a state of "non existance". When you die, you return to dirt and there is the end of existance as you know it but dirt exists and plants that grow in the dirt exist.
If it gives you solace to know that other life is springing from your dead body even when you are not aware of it, then believe that and know that it is true and scientifically accurate.
Your dead body will contribute to the life cause but that is all. No consciousness after death...just like sleeping without dreams.

I too have proof beyond doubt that we don't die. Only the flesh dies. It is our soul/personality that lives for ever.
Even if this wasn't the case and we went to nothing, it would be like going to sleep as we do each night. We are unaware of anything whilst sleeping and if we died in our sleep, we wouldn't know any difference.

In the bible the book of Hebrews it says............Man is destined to die once and after that face judgement.
Do you get it now.......there is life after death. Jesus said not to worry what kills the body but to fear falling into the hands of a living God. Jesus said...I am the way the truth and the life no man can come to the father but through me. REPENT.
