I am 41, grew up in an evangelical church before becoming an atheist at age 12, but I don't remember ever hearing this while I attended.

Is this new form of Christian special pleading tied in some way to the Creationist movt?

dze: exactly. the word "day" is MEANINGLESS without the Sun. So, it's either day as humans understand it, or nothing.

No it is because Jesus said that for the Father, a day could be a thousand years or a thousand years could be a day.

FROM DAY TO TIMES AND SEASONS TO LAST DAYS

2Pet.3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers,
walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming?
for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the
beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the
word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and
in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water,
perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept
in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a
thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
DAY #01.
Gen.1:5... And the evening and the morning were the first day.
DAY #02.
Gen.1:8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were
the second day.
DAY #03.
Gen.1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
DAY #04.
TIMES AND SEASONS:
FOR THE LIFE SUSTAINING EARTH:
Gen.1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide
the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days,
and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light
upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light
to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the
darkness: and God saw that it was good.
Gen.1:19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

1Thes.5:1-9,21; Jesus does not come as a thief in the night to the children of the
light of times and seasons.

TIME LIMIT.
May be 6,130 years after Eden to Rev.20:1-6 [ 1000 year reign ]; or 2670 years after Babylon Empire #3 [ THERE WILL BE NO KING UNTIL JESUS AT HIS SECOND COMING ],
or it may be that when Empire #7 has ended the SHORT TIME FOR SATAN IS 150 years, Matt.24: 3, 7, 14, 15, 22, 34, 36-38 [ only God knows the day and hour ];

Gen.1:1,2 [ Does all exist here ]? Gen.1:3-25 [ Preparation of the earth, think about it as the earth can tell the story, the time is evident in plant life and animal life ];
THINK OF HUMAN NATURE IF GOD SAID GEN.1:1,2; IS 100 BILLION, who would believe anything said, let man argue about it as is being done, is that what they like?
IF GOD SAID OF GEN.1:3-25 [ 41,870 YEARS WITH 7, 130 YEARS TO GO TO 49,000 ];
This would be nothing but an argument as it is already, can man comprimise, why is there 1000's of religions?

The bible was originally written in Hebrew, then translated to Greek, then to Latin, then to English. going back to the Hebrew version and translating Genesis to English the translator was confronted with a word that had a double meaning (I'm sorry I don't know this word)...it could mean a day (as humans see it-a 24 hour period) it also meant "a stretch of time" a simple but ambiguous stretch of time. But time was irrelevant because Genesis was not written to satisfy the scientific curiosities of How and When the earth was created, is was written to explain Who created the earth. so Genesis could be referring to a 24 hour stretch of time or countless eons. But whatever the time span, it was irrelevant to the church. Time became relevant when scientists (christian or otherwise) started to ask when and how the earth was created. They had been told all their lives that creation happened in 7 days. I don't have an exact answer to your initial question, I can only guess that sometime during the scientific revolution did people start to question what a "day" is according to the bible and god.

The question of God's time verses our time has been around for quite a while. Over a hundred years. Scholars have considered the Mayan calendar as an instrument that verifies the time lines of earth and the ethereal world. It has always been said that God created the heavens and earth in 7 days, hence the matter of our week. But we are without the understanding of God's day. The Mayan calendar ends in December of 2012. Many believe we will enter the seventh day of creation. 1000 years of peace. Let's hope they're right.

2 Peter 3:8–9 reads:

‘But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day

***********

Before the earth was formed and had a day and night cycle... how long was a day?

Before there was a man to measure the length of a day did it matter?

Because the definition of the length of a day for man was defined by man... I wouldn't have any problem with the "days" in the first part of Genesis being figurative rather than literal.

think of it as watching a seed grow
or as watching the see
same every day till a big enough change occurs to say this is new
thus is the measure of a day
a period between changes
observable changes
when stone turns to water
or animals or trees are made
stages only called days for children to recall the stages
if you recalled all the days could a child recall all
or just give then a few to reason out thier own truth in thier own time?
