I have been diagnosed with essential tremor. I have noticed that it follows a pattern 3 weeks of varying degrees of hand tremor followed by week of normal. I seems to be associated with my menstrual cycle and is much worse in the week prior, during and following. Somewhere in the middle I will be 'normal' ie no tremor no matter what the situation for 3 days to a week. I asked the neurologist about this and he said I was just being stupid. Obviously the answer was he doesnt know. I would like to know does anyone else get this, or does anyone know the mechanism involved (or are willing to speculate). Look forward to hearing anyones ideas on the matter.

Cheers Callie

Well as you have been diagnosed with Essential Tremors, i know next logical thing would be to discover a cause....but unfortunatly ET doesn't have it. The cause is not known (even after many medical researches). Only one thing that they menaged to discover about it is the fact that it runs in a family - that's exactlly what "essential" means in the name.
It is movement disorder, some chemicals in the brain don't function good (eather you have some of them too much or too little) and it causes the involuntary shaking. Basecly, some genetic mutation happend. Exactly what causes essential tremor in people without a known genetic mutation isn't clear. Doctors do know that the problem occurs in the brain circuits that control your movements. Studies using an imaging technique called positron emission tomography (PET) scanning show that certain parts of the brain — including the thalamus — have increased activity in people with essential tremor. More research is needed to understand the precise mechanism behind the disease.

What you have been mentioning - that some certain phases in life can affect it, that doesn't represent the cause it's just a trigger that can make it worse or less visible. Well known triggers of ET are:
Stress, emotions of any sort - good and bad, everything that makes the adrenalin go wild, caffeine, not enough of rest/sleep, certain life styles etc.

I would advise you to stop seeking logic in this one, but start doing all the things nessecery to reduce symptoms and help yourself cope better.
