No doubt about it. There hasn't been one religion that hasn't been corrupted by the almighty coin for as long as religion has been around. Catholics used religion to gain power and money as one example. However, God is gonna clean house pretty soon going by the signs of the times.

Religions were created for different purpose and then used by people for personal gain at different time in history. Lucius Seneca's saying was quite true.

To me it implies that rulers are grateful for religion because it gives the a method of controlling common people. Usually the people most likely to commit crime are deterred by religion and therefore it serves rulers well.

I don't think it really means that a ruler should invent a new religion.

no, it means that rulers have used religion for political gain.. but if you are a ruler somewhere, creating a religion may not be a bad idea for you

Absolutely. Also for monetary gain.

What would be really stupid would be to start a religion that focuses on charity, good works, and helping the downtrodden. There's no percentage in it.
