Migraines:
Caffeine is addictive and withdrawl from it is causing your migraines. Several over the counter medications have caffeine in them, like Excedrine and Midol, so read labels when reaching for a pain reliever.
Acetaminophen and some low grade (81mg) aspirin should help. That's basically what Excedrine is, minus the caffeine. Find a quiet dark place and try to sleep it off. Within a few months you should be free of the headaches.
Overcoming Soda Addiction:
"Sipping and snacking" (where people aren't used to being without a soda/cup of coffee and something to nibble on) is very common. You'll need a replacement for something to drink and bottled water wont be the same. Fiji bottles a very expensive but unique water - you may wish to try it. Very different.
I recommend several flavored, carbonated water beverages which can be found in most supermarkets. You want something without caffeine, calories, and sodium. Because it's carbonated, it goes good with meals and you still kinda feel like you're having soda.
This is also a great option because caffeine dehydrates the body but now you'll get hooked on water. :)

I read once that addictions are the hand to mouth procedure, rather than what you are using.
I guess if you still want to have a drink of some sort, try soda water with a diet cordial.
It's usually difficult to go cold turkey. unless you replace it with something that won't do you any harm.
Hard to say whether the migraines are a result of giving up caffeine or just the result of depriving yourself of something you like. Sometimes you can work this out for you self.

be careful drinking too much diet coke. studies consistently show that drinking a lot of diet coke or diet pepsi accelerates bone degradation which leads to osteoperosis. having migranes? take an aspirin but i am sure you have a migrane more because of your psychological affection with diet coke and separating yourself from it is making you suffer with what i like to call 'habit disconnection'

Going cold turky to give up diet coke is probably the worst thing its the caffine you are addicted to. I have an addiction to chocolate which also has a lot of caffine in also. I went cold turkey Which worked to help me loose weight. Then I bought one chocolate and that was it. At the moment I find it hard to give up.

The sugar alternative aspartame which is contained in small amounts in diet coke, has been identified as a possible carcinogen, i.e. it caused brain cancer in rats, But i do not know how much aspartame the rats recieved and for how long a time,
The reason aspartame is used is because its about 150 times sweeter than sugar, so only 1/150th of the quantiy is needed = less carbs less calories.
If you want to quite think brain cancer.

You are suffering from caffeine withdrawal.
I am also a big drinker of Diet Coke and have suffered the same symptons whenever I have tried to give it up.
Remember to drink plenty of water and the symptons will eventually pass.
