Rich people will always consume more energy, that is, they will always consume more goods and services as this equal to energy as well (otherwise what's the point to be rich).
So the trick is to do our best within our budget (bigger budget means we consume more but hopefully without excess, and yes, the rich people should spend money buying solar panels, hybrid cars, buying energy efficient mansion, etc.)
From a consumption stand point, an avg. American shouldn't try to compete with an avg. Indian (from India)... The Indian will always win.
So why should rich American try to compete with the avg. American, again in term of consumption? So, if everyone do their best within their budget than in avg. we're all good.

We should all (citizens, corporations and governments) have a core desire to: not trash the earth; plant more trees than we cut; and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.
Blowing the whistle on Gores [and other wealthy enviromentalists] consumption is a necessary part of the solution.

He's trying to warn you wilfully ignorant Americans about the consequences of your corporate actions (or inactions).
Like anyone who tells the truth, he can't expect much acceptance or sympathy from you people.
I don't want to be anti-American; I've met lots of good friendly Americans, but your opinions on this site are enough to turn anyone against you.

i think we try to understand global warming, and listen to what he has to say. but if he waste that much energy, he should move, he should try to help the environment if he cares about it, and not expect eveyrbody else to make up for his mistake

Why are you asking me?
If you have the nerve to complain about someone you should also have the balls to ask them directly.
