I still distinctly recall a large black rotary phone that hung on the wall in the kitchen - No such thing as a microwave or a cel phone or computers and watching more than a few black and white TV's .
I also recall cars that were the size of a boat -

To me the "olden days " were filled with horse drawn carriages and cowboys fighting Indians and so forth - I pictured no electricity and no TV - My mother for instance used to tell me the family gathered around the radio when she was small and that most houses did not have a telephone at all -

So I am curious what the kids of today would consider the old days ?

As a former sub teacher I can relate two interesting incidents. The first, a couple of years ago, was when I was going to show the movie "Empire of the Sun". I told the year the film was made and the students complained, saying they didn't want to see an old film. But when it played they were pleasantly surprised and thought it seemed more like a modern film. The year? 1987.

Another incident occurred several years ago. A student in all seriousness asked the poignant question, "What's MTV?"

I'm not sure at what age kids of today begin to think about "the olden days". Personally, I didn't start thinking about the "olden days" until I was in my forty's. I am now approaching 66.

I remember telephone operators asking you what number you wanted when you picked up the phone; and, the operator could usually tell you if that person was home or not. There were "party lines". When you picked up your phone receiver, and someone else was on the line, you could listen in on their conversation! Wouldn't that be a hoot if you could do that today! Before I was nine, all the phones in my community were crank phones. You turned a handle to ring the operator.

Families sat at a dining room table to have meals. Most children today only sit down at a table at Thanksgiving and Christmas, if then. Hopefully, our children and grandchildren will be able to look back on their childhood and remember some "good old days".

To me the olden days are more like little pieces of memories from being at my great grandmother's house when I was small and the things there that I didn't see anywhere else. The cast-iron looking oscillating fan that sat high on a shelf in the corner of her kitchen, little old frame houses with breeze-ways and screened in porches with rockers on them, her in a dress picking peas in her garden and humming to herself acting as if her glaucoma or arthritis didn't bother her...going to the Piggly-Wiggly on Saturday afternoons.

My 13 year old son will often refer to "back in the day" when he is telling a story from when he was in kindergarten or first grade. LOL

my son would probably think the olden days were when you had to go to an arcade to play video games, or only had black and white TV
