I've been living in Taiwan for 2 years now. For the last nine months I've been studying at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei and my Chinese has really improved a lot!

Not only am I a student of Chinese, but also an English teacher. Let me tell you that when acquiring a new language, the best thing you can do is to immerse yourself in the appropriate environment.

I suggest going to either Beijing or Taipei as they both have excellent reputations for teaching Mandarin. If you decide to come to Taipei, you can contact me via my yahoo360 and I can give you some advice about the place.

Another thing - ideally you don't want a Mandarin teacher who can speak English (because before you know it, you'll be paying money to have a language exchange) - trust me, I've been there and got the T-shirt. The teachers at Wen-Hua (Culture University) aren't allowed to use English, which is of a great benefit to students!
