"evolution" is just a theory (meaning it is made up). I can hold the Bible in my hand and therefore it is a fact. What is the difficulty?

The theory of biological evolution through natural selection is indeed a scientific theory. A scientific theory does not mean 'it is made up' however. A scientific theory is one that is supported through observations and predictions from physical evidence, and the predictions made through the theory match observations we can make today.

The theory of evolution has been supported by physical evidence and observations for more than 150 years, and remains a valid scientific theory. There is more evidence supporting the theory of evolution than there is for the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun, or that germs cause disease. There is a LOT more evidence for evolution than the evidence that explains the theory of gravity.

Scientifically, the theory of evolution is considered as close to a fact as you can get in science.

Spiritually, if you feel that the Bible gives you answers to life's imponderables, and that the guidance it gives you to live your life day to day makes you a better person, then it too is factual.

Where the Bible is not factual, is in some of the specific details in a few lines of Genesis (which are not even internally consistent between chapters), and don't match with scientific evidence from the fields of astronomy, physics, chemistry, anatomy, geology, paleontology, zoology, genetics or evolution.

If you are willing to accept that rabbits & hyraxes don't chew their cud, that men don't have fewer ribs than women, that insects have more than four legs, and that calves don't come out stripy when cows look at striped poles, then there's no reason to also reject evolution just because it doesn't fit with the idea that God created all the critters "poof" in one day.

It's only when fundamentalists insist on a literal interpretation of the Bible that there is any source of debate at all.

You are right to say this and ask what the difficulty is.
I think the difficulty is that most of you people do not understand what a theory is. Evolution is a proved observable fact. It was observable long before Darwin. There were quite a few different ideas proposed. Those are Hypotheses. Hypothesis need to be tested. Testing is first seeing if the hypothesis matches all known facts. If it does then next is to make some predictions. If the hypothesis predicts something contrary to everything known, against all current theory and against common sense that is something to try.
Now about falsification. That is not trying to prove the idea wrong, it is making a prediction about what would happen if the teory was wrong. An experiment might be done showing the theory to hold or fail. If it has passed all this it is accepted as truth(for now) and used as the theory about how something works.
In the meantime every observation being made under this theory is being checked for fit. The theory might fail at any time. It is constantly tested and upgraded.
Is this what you mean when you say just a theory?

ps. "old guy" is simply wrong.

Sweetheart in that case I can hold The Lord of the Rings in my right hand and Harry Potter in my left hand and "therefore call them fact".

Evolution is not made up. DO you realise that gravity is actually a theory? It is you know.

Do you know the whole E=MC2 thing that einstein came up with? Yea that's from his general theory of relativity... The atom bomb over hiroshima didn't look all that made up to me though....

Ok, I'm gonna answer, but I don't want you to judge until I've said my peace. You did ask for it didn't you?

The Bible your holding in your hand right now was a book printed by man. You cannot deny that. God did not print that Bible.

Look at the covers and it will tell you the publisher.

Now, TIME is not important to GOD.

DO you think your SO inportant that you know how things went?

Maybe GOD took his time to make man in his image after experimenting with other things.

How do you know what GOD looks like?

Warning....If you say you know your really treading on HIS turf.

I don't think he likes to be told what he is or isn't.

I can hold a fosil in my hand as much as you can hold a bible.

WHO are you to decide what GOD has done?

God is better than us both so why don't WE just do our best to be good and let Him/Her decide.

Or do you think you need to decide good for him?

The difficulty is in the definition of the word "theory". 30 years ago you were correct, but since evolutionists could not prove the theory of evolution to be a fact, they rewrote the dicitionary and changed the meaning of the word "theory" to mean something that is fact if enough people believe it is. So now evolutionists get upset when you claim that because t is a theory it is not true. Under the new dictionary a theory is true.

There is not debate it is a settled issue. There is only a wailing an gnashing of teeth on the part of those who don't believe.
A theory is a scientific model that explaines a vast array of empirical observation ( i.e. facts). I can hold a copy of Homer in my hand, I guess that makes Zeus a fact too.

Evolution is a theory, meaning it is tried and tested.

I can hold the book "24 short fiction stories" in my hand and it is no fact.

holding the bible in your hand makes it true, the fact that it's a bible.
just because you hold it in your hand doesn't mean that everything it says in it is fact.
you can't prove God. Thus FAITH. If it wasn't for lack of provability, christianity would crumble, it relies on faith. Jesus told one of his disciples to meet him out on the water, he step off the boat and went in the water and Jesus commented on his lack of faith, i belive it's when he said ye of little faith.
And, just because you believe something, doesn't mean that it works for someone else, Like i said christianity is something you have faith in, some people look more for logical, which if you ask me evolution is just as my of a stretch in logic, but some people think it makes more sense than, someone speaking Earth into exisitence.
