why did general motors choose shanghai as their location for their car factory?

Do you mean the factory for the cars meant for the Chineese market? If so, why not Shanghai?

Then again, I know of no such factory...

if you want detail answer just maybe you should call gm your self! they did it to save money what more is it to it.
