Howdy, I used to be a Boy Scout, so I've been camping before...but me and my mates want to go "wilderness" camping...just bring our packs, food, knives, etc and sleep out in the wild for a few days. We live in the Chicago suburbs...so I'm willing to drive to U.P. Michigan, or whatever.

Any camp location ideas? Is it legal to camp "anywhere?" What are the laws on bringing firearms (say, a hunting rifle) along on the camping trip (not for target shooting, or hunting, hell no... i just own a rifle i've always wanted to bring camping...haha...just a lil' thing ive wanted to do)?

I don't live on that end of the country, so I can't suggest specific locations, but regarding your other questions...

Is it perfectly legal to camp on most state and federal lands, but usually you are required to purchase a permit (pretty cheap). There are millions and millions of acres of wilderness land in the United States, so just research locations a little online and find one that sounds interesting and is within your experiance level.

Regarding taking your hunting rifle, it is probably not legal. Sidearms may be allowed (almost definately if you have a Carry Permit) but I'm not sure how the laws are in your state. Depending on how far you guys have to hike it (it's usually at least 5-10 miles to get to a "wilderness" area) you probably wouldn't want to lug a heavy hunting rifle along anyway. If you can't carry a gun, you should probably buy some bear spray or other means of defense, and make sure you're prepared. Good luck and hopefully you have a great time.

You can Camp on most state owned lands in Mi. with a permit.the U.P has millions of acres open to the public,we go about 20 mi. north of Newberry MI. it is so secluded you'll feel like you're in Alaska and its close to these amazing waterfalls. As for the rifle,I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to carry a firearm in the woods unless its hunting season, but check on the MI.DNR website to be sure, because i could be wrong.I would definitely recommend the U.P. it is so awesome up there

Look for state , federal , national, parks in your area. See if they have primitive camping . I don,t think taking a gun is a good idea . If you want to shoot take a camera. Leave only footprints take only pictures.
