I received letters from various college stating that they cannot construct a financial aid package for me because they can't prove my citizenship using my social security number (I'm a neutralized citizen). How can I prove my citizenship since never took the time to apply for a passport? What documents can I give them?

I know that lots of info is stored in the SS, so how can I update my social security to show that I am a citizen?

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated!

If you are a naturalized citizen, you should have a certificate of naturalization, which is sufficient proof of citizenship. Social security does not keep your naturalization status on record, nor divulge that information for the asking to other organizations.

If you have lost your certificate of naturalization, you need to go to the Bureau of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly INS) and see about replacing that. Their website is here:

Most colleges will accept a residence certificate from the county (not country) that you are living in. This would only come into play if you are actually living somewhere in the US and can show proof of it by producing ID (including photo ID) with your current address on it. Most colleges will assist you in this by providing you with the information on how to do this. Otherwise just contact the county offices in the jurisdiction where you live (it's usually where local property taxes are paid). You will need to get the form and have it notarized.
Ask the colleges about this and see what they say. I would think that this would help.
Additionally, structuring a financial aid package is different than applying for financial aid. Have you applied to FASFA yet? If you are not already aware of this, I recommend looking into it. As long as you have a social security number and are a citizen, you should not have a problem. This is a government site. Just pick the schools that you are interested in and fill in the required information and once they review your application they will let you know what type of aid you are qualified for based on your income. You don't have to commit to a particular school...it's just to let you know what you would qualify for if you chose to attend that particular school. You can enter quite a few schools.

Also, don't you have a certificate of citizenship somewhere? If not, you should apply for one. It would make things easier for you.
Good luck to you.

Aren't you awarded a certificate of citizenship upon naturalization? If you have it, I suggest you send a copy of it to the appropriate people. If you don't have one, you can get one here: http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/citizenship_certificate.html

My first step would be to make a app with ss and tell them what you have told us on this site, I am sure they could help and give you the right advice
