This is actually a very natural instinct for babies. Hey, wouldn't you be hungry too after about a day of very hard work and trying to get out of something the size of an oreo? Anyway, there were studies done on this, and they found that if placed on the mother's belly the moment it is out, the baby will go rooting for the mother's breast until it latches on.

Yep, its instinct. Place anything the size of a nipple in an infants mouth (your pink for example) and it will suckle on it.
