Hi - I just brought home a new puppy (maltese) seven days ago. He was fine at first, playing and happy. Thursday night, I turned my back for one sec and he got into the cat food - just a nibble or two before I pulled him away.
It's been two days now of vomiting and diarrhea, & he is not doing much more than sleeping.
I took him to the Vet. He didn't have a fever. The Vet said he most likely has just an upset tummy and gave me some medicine for him.
That was yesterday. He hasn't improved any. I am very worried and nervous. :-(
Any suggestions? He is still drinking his water but he doesn't seem interested in the prescription food the Vet gave me to give him.

Also, I forgot to mention this to the Vet, but at the same time my pup got sick, I came down with a slight case of the flu - I am not sure if this has anything to do with it but I am a new puppy owner and quite nervous at being a bad mommy!

Thanks all. I am mixing baby food (chicken and rice) with water and he likes drinking that. Still no solids though. A bit of nutrical this morning. Very lethargic still.

It isn't likely that your puppy became ill with your flu, virus's that thrive in humans don't thrive in dogs, and visa~versa.
Your puppy needs some nourishment other than water. You can get NutraStat or NutraCal at Walmart's pet section or any pet supply shop.
It is a tube (like toothpaste) that you squeeze an inch out and put on his tongue.

Hi Olivers, You pup still has an upset tummy. It will probably take the medicine a good 3 days before you notice a differents. You could give the little guy a half of a teaspoon of Pepto (that pink stuff for upset tummy). Make sure you water the pepto down a little,if you don't it will be to strong for him.Give this to him every 2 hours until you notice he wants to eat a little food. That way you can speed things up for the little guy. I have done this with my dogs and it does work. Besides that my vet told me to do this with my dogs. Remember just a half of a teaspoon with a little water to mix it. A Dog Lover Who Cares And Know's

If he's still drinking water, that's a good sign. A day without food won't hurt him any as long as he is staying hydrated. It might actually be good for him to get all the yucky stuff out of his system. In the mean time, you can try giving him a bland diet of plain chicken and rice which is basically the main components of some dog foods anyway. Just a little at a time until he can keep it down and let things firm up. I hope he feels better soon!!

You are not a bad mommy. You are a great mommy. I think the vet is right, but if the pup doesn't feel better soon, I would take him back to the vet. Poor little guy, He should be okay and don't be hard on yourself. Taking care of animals is quite a job at times
I don't think he caught anything from you. Cat food is too rich for puppies..

Puppies are very sensitive and delicate. My dog has eaten
cat food before and loved it. They might get an upset
stomach, but it is nothing to worry about. Just make sure the
pup is drinking, cause when their stomach is upset, they tend
not to want to eat. They may just throw it up. In a few days
your pup will be back to normal.

Hmmm... If he isn't better I would ask about having some blood work done. A fatty meal can trigger pancreatitis, and they get pretty ill from that. Maltese can sometimes have liver shunts, and you don't know they are there usually, sometimes the pup will be abnormally small. A high-protein meal can really wreak havoc on a dog with a liver shunt, as the liver is responsible for clearing the body of the byproducts of protein digestion. And it's not good for one this small to be off food for so long.

The vet is most likely right. and if you just went yesterday and gave him medicine they don't always just get better in one day. some dog sicknesses can be contagious to humans but not all.
p.s. ur not a bad mommy for that !!

Try giving the dog a little bit of cheese. If he eats it then mix some grated in with his prescription food. Dogs love cheese.

Give it a day or two and he should be fine. Try to get him to eat by heating up the food slightly in the microwave (not hot). Sometimes they are attracted by the smell when the food is warmed. Also try baby food. When my Yorkshire Terrier would get sick I would give her baby food or cottage cheese.

Mix a little karo syrup (from the grocery store) and water together.
Try to get him to drink it.
Rub a little karo syrup on his gums.
At least that way he is getting something more than water.
