it all depends on 3 things. "your" body composition, what you are eating and how much. if the nutrients fit in your daily caloric intake there should be no weight gain. you would not want to eat a steak before bed but protein shake, eggs, fish, cottage cheese, etc. all all exceptable forms of protein.
the sleeping metabolic rate depends on the amount of fat free mass that the individual has. the more lean the person is the less the decrease from the resting to sleeping metabolic rate.
60% of muscle growth occurs during sleep (only with sufficient nutrients) if increasing the amount of muscle mass or decreasing body fat is your focus there is nothing wrong with consuming an easily digestible protein source with some health fats in the non-obese individual.
decreasing the amount of time spent in a catabolic state is 2nd best to increasing anabolism in the muscle cell. if you want to be lean you have to feed your muscles. when the body has enough energy/nutrients to support the BMR and level of activity then the body will start to release fat stores. the people that say not to eat after 6-7 pm and then not until breakfast are the same people that will never get a six pack. keeping the body in a catabolic state for 1/2 the day does not get you lean and surly isn't optimum for increasing lipolysis (fat loss).

Yes it's true. You are at rest when sleeping and that means you dont burn calories that much. The food you ate wil not be well processed that should be converted as energy. Instead it goes to your body's adipose tissue and it becomes an excess body fat. The excess body fat will add on your body mass which will tend to make a person overweight or obese.

Yes it is true because your body is not burning off anything while you are sleeping, but turns whatever junk food you have eaten into fat. Carbs turn to sugar if not burned off through excersize.
