There are three sound adjustments that affect video playback:
1. Hardware: turn up the volume on the speaker box (I'm sure you've tried that.)
2. Master volume: this is software controlled, and is the volume control you see on the Media Player screen.
3. Wave volume: this is a setting that controls how loud software playback is, relative to the master volume.

To access the latter two controls, check if you have an icon that looks like a speaker on the lower right corner of the screen. If you do, right-click it and select Open Volume Control. This should show you all the sliders for different sound devices. Increase the Master and Wave controls.
If you don't have the icon, go into Control Panel, and select "Sounds and Audio Devices" under the Volume tab. Check off "Place Volume Control Icon on Task Bar" to enable this icon. On this screen, you can also click on "Advanced" to open the volume control.
