What have we moved away from and what are we moving toward?

Personally I believe we are moving away from God, and the beliefs handed down through the Bible, and we are moving toward a secularism which is destroying the family unit, and causing depression. God's mandates were not only for our preservation, but also for our mental and physical well being. My opinion of course-----------What is yours, I would like to hear from you??????????

You can fool people anytime , but, if there is a higher authority you can't fool, then you are accountable for your actions...by removing the higher authority thru distraction and alienation we have become accountable only to ourselves...other fallible people we know to be like ourselves as police and judges.....Recognition of a higher authority that operates on a timeless scale of justice is a necessary componant of a SELF-governing society...Jesus said there would be a "falling away" of the masses...And they don't mind the state of society today, as a matter of a fact they will fault "believers" as the source of the decline of modern society and the reason for their innate guilt and emptiness in their lives!

There's more so called immorality now because it's more socially acceptable. Now it's a hug a thug mentality. If you cheat on your wife, it's ok as long as you go to rehab or say that the devil made you do it. If you're a child molestor, you can easily say you had a bad childhood and people will feel sorry for you. Seriously, who had a perfect childhood? We all don't feel the need to commit a felony because our mommy didn't hug us enough. It's called lack of accountability. It's easier to rationalize bad behavior than to just say the person is an idiot. That's just my take. That has nothing to do with religion or anything like that. That's just people not wanting to own up to what they really are.

Suicide is probably higher because life is more stressful. There's more diseases nowadays and this society holds money in very high regard. Most people don't feel whole until they have every little thing their neighbor has and has to be the first one on the block to get a new toy. Alot of people are work obsessed and that takes a toll mentally & physically. I think 30 years ago, family and friends were more the focus instead of having a 24k gold toilet and the new Playstation 3. Our priorities have changed.

I do agree with you to an extent about moving away from God. Look at the whole Jesus' tomb thing. It's another thing to try to disprove the bible or make Jesus into something He wasn't. I doubt that has a huge affect on how people act. It's just more in the open now. Now there is Dateline: To Catch a Predator instead of Leave It To Beaver.

1/ the family unit is a myth. Before the 50s most lived in clusters of families. My own dad was brought up in a street where his aunts and uncles lived. They all gave support etc. This meant that when a person had a problem they could go and share it. there was also child minding support so couples could spend time together thus relieving pressure. Even the middle classes had servants or live with neighbours they could rely on.

After the war families were moved all over the place and the support network was lost. Without that - the so called nuclear family exploded.

I have no faith in any god however i have great faith in human kind if they open their minds.

I think it is partly b/c of not being afraid of God and having strong beliefs. And Im not saying anyone has to be a certain religion all I am saying is that b/c people no longer respect God that they also do not respect themselves as much...
Its simple if rules were put into the family and the family stayed comitted to them and were honest and took time to be a family the majority of kids would not go to school saying my parents dont care about me I hate them etc....
In america we work more than a lot of other countries... Parents work come home buy grocereies clean house.... Children go to school have hrs of homework part time jobs sports etc and although this is all part of life wheres the time to sit down relax and get to be a family.?! I do think that if pepole followed scripture or read it and took the time to teach themselves and there children they would definately learn something of value!
Another thing is if you look at People from 30 yrs ago .. they didnt have the technology and same amount of pressure on them(?) Kids are groeing up a lot faster than they use to mentally and physically. There are more horomnes in things and they need to know more so they want to be more independent at a younger age... away from the family

Trying to pin all of our culture's problems on a single source, not being into your god enough, is too simple to be true. Have you really ever studied sociology, social problems, and human nature? Or, are you just thinking your faith is the answer to all of life's woes? 'If I would only convert to Faith X, all my troubles would vanish overnight!' Sorry, man, but that's so gay. No ancient Hebrew war god created the earth, or man, or is the sole path of human spirituality, or is the only answer for very complex problems. What about homeless men? They can find Jesus and still be homeless, alcoholic, and have mental disorders. If you could find a way to put this super-cure of yours into a can and market it, you'de make millions. Go spend time with the down and out. Volunteer to help at a homeless shelter. Join Big Brothers and influence the life of a poor child with hard daily issues. Get your hands dirty, cause your 'one solution fits all' idea just shows that you need to learn about real folks, real problems, and not just 'convert and everything will be peachy'.

All I know is that people are depressed. They think life sucks, and for most drugs and alcohol are the only way out. Or maybe it's just adolescent/young adult stage in life, and maybe this has been going on for a while. But from what I see, lots of people are depressed cause they can't get laid, it's kind of sad, but they get all bonkers over it, either that or stress, tons and tons of stress. God, why can't people just relax a bit? Well, the only thing worse than not getting laid is getting really really frustrated because you can't get laid. God bless masturbation, and God why don't more people do it? Well, I guess that's not my place to interfer, I just hope people calm down a bit.

The divorce rate is higher for two reasons: people are living longer, so people are more likely to change their needs in the way of a companion, and divorce has much less public opprobrium now than it used to have. The suicide rate is probably not much different, and there is no data available on immorality, because it is too subjective.

1) Higher divorce rate: People can leave abusive marriages. (And other things)

2) Suicide: Because now the world supposedly canonly speak of itself in terms about how wow-good-amazing it is. People don't listen anymore. People also are greedy, making jobs tight. People also do strange things because of religion. The 'counseling' given by fundies to gay sons and daughters is well known for making their lives into **** and then telling them they have to say they are happy with it all the time.

3) Immorality seems to stem from a consumer society, but there could be more.

God? Pah. God helps those who help themselves - and it would appear the ability to think for oneself is no setback either.

Finally, I would say that promotion of things that supposedly are more important than contributing to society are helping all those things. Religion, where it uses human authority figures who can't be questioned, is not innocent. Neither is nearly everything else.

Promote social responsibility!

It's not secularism that's destroying the family unit.

The divorce rate amongst god-fearing people is just as high as it is among non-believers. Lack of religion hasn't anything to do with it.

I daresay there's no more immorality - there's just 320 television channels to watch it on and a LOT more open gossip.

Do you have figures to back up your statements?

Interesting, but the facts say something else:

Atheists have a lower divorce rate than Christians and teen pregnancies and STDs are highest in the U.S. (statistically the most Christianized country in the world) and lowest in many of the least religious countries in the world (Sweden for example):

Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and for Atheists and Agnostics:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

The rate of teen pregnancies in the U.S. is twice as high as any other industrialized nation:

http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/fb_teens.html

A comparison of Christian "red states" vs. more secular "blue states" in U.S. shows that the top 15 states for teen pregnancies were all red states, while for the 16 states with the lowest rates all but 3 were blue states (including the 6 with the lowest rates):
