i'm looking up various drugs to treat ADD before i go in to see a doctor, and i heard this is a good mild one but is very expensive and most insurances don't cover it unless it's prescribed for the thing it's FDA approved to treat. So what is that thing?

It's given for Chronic Fatigue. I don't see how it would help with ADD? Maybe it does the opposite when taking it for ADD. But, because of my health I am chronically fatigued to where I can't stay awake for very long periods of time. Provigil makes me feel very alert and awake.

Provigil is only approved to treat narcolepsy and sleep-shift work disorder altho an off label use is to treat depression and ADD. Try Strattera for ADD.
