In actuality propoxyphene (Darvon) is a lousy pain reliever and the FDA was considering banning it in the 1970s. Darvon was never withdrawn from the market, but Lilly has waged a sweeping, and largely successful, campaign among doctors, pharmacists and Darvon users to defend the drug as safe when it is used in proper doses and not mixed with alcohol. Propoxyphene is a mild narcotic analgesic structurally related to methadone. The potency of propoxyphene hydrochloride is from two-thirds to equal that of codeine. Despite its "weakness" as a pain reliever, it can be addicting and is abused, especially when in combination with alcohol.
In most instances the product is combined with another pain reliever, usually acetaminophen (Tylenol) such as Darvovet and Wygesic. It is thought that the acetaminophen is most responsible for its effectiveness.
I hope this helps.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, or vision changes may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes. Tell your doctor immediately if this highly unlikely but very serious side effect occurs: change in the amount of urine. If you do not have liver problems, the adult maximum dose of acetaminophen is 4 grams per day (4000 milligrams). If you take more than the maximum daily amount, it may cause serious (possibly fatal) liver disease. Propoxyphene may also rarely cause liver disease. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any of the following symptoms of liver damage: severe nausea/vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, extreme fatigue. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
