A surname is a family name or a last name that is passed down from generation to generation. In chinese families, the family name will also be the surname for every member of the family. Typically surnames are passed down from the father, which is why in traditional chinese families, they prefer their offspring to be boys.

A surname is just a person's last name. (or if you're Japanese, their first name).

Or if you just wanna be general, it's their family name
Ex) George W Bush. Bush is the surname.

It's a label. Something people can use to easily identify you with. Usually it's your fathers last name, but sometimes it can be your mothers. Later in life you can change it to match your husband/wife or partners last name, or he/she can change his/hers to match yours. It's just an easy way of showing that people are a family unit.

Sometimes though if people don't like their surname they will change it to something else of their own choosing. Anything goes these days really. As long as you make it official. It's yours, it's who you are. Do with it what you like. :-)
