It's really unfortuneate but your mother-in-law will be around most likely far longer than the dog will be and you don't need her adding to your stress while you're caring for the dog.
So don't hate the woman. It's not worth the effort.I'm sure she meant well. But had I been in your situation I'd have looked her in the eye and asked her if she'd have put one of her kids down had they contracted epilepsy? Then I would have further pointed out that she does not pay for food and vet bills and meds nor does she have to feed, administer meds or clean up after your dog so it's not her concern. Then I'd have left the room and refused to hear any more about it no matter how many times the subject was brought up.

As for the seizures and the pain there is no pain when you have a seizure at least I have never experienced any during one. The only problem that I have experienced is just the soreness of you muscels afterwards. It feels as if you were beaten at least that is how it affects me when I used to have the Grand Mall (Bad ones) and I have been seizure free for 30 years but still stay on meds and am very productive......................so if medication works and you are willing to bear the expense then I would keep the dog
As for mother in law, rember that is your wifes mother and should be someone near and dear to her no matter what she (your wife) says or does your wife loves her and hateing mother in law over an animal that has problems is a bit far fetched. Those kind of things are what seperates families and loved ones un necessarily, I am sure she ment no harm.

Some people don't realize that epilepsy is a very treatable condition and can be managed. The meds are not expensive and as long as the seizures are controlled, the animal doesn't suffer. I have a lab with epilepsy. Her condition is very controlled and as long as we keep her out of the extreme heat, she does very well. Try to forgive her for yourself if not for her sake. Some people just react out of ignorance and this is probably the case here. Take care

She may be concerned about the dog, and about you. If the dog's seizures are under control, then you should just tell her so. However, if its a large dog, they can be a danger, since sometimes after a seizure they act very disoriented and can't seem to see, which can lead to them attacking a person since they don't know that person is there to help them. My brother had a saint bernard that he had to put down since he has two young children and the seizures were quite severe.
Just discuss it with her, go over the different types of seizures that dogs can have, the treatments they can go through and let her know you're aware of the dangers for you and your dog, and are confident that you can handle it, and have a vet's opinion that you can too. No need to hate her forever when you can just talk it out.

From personal experience a dog with seizures can lead a long and happy life on medication. Some people don't understand the bonds between animals and humans so I would continue to treat your dog for its problems and tell your mother in law to mind her own business. Forgive her for being ignorant and remind her that someday you might have to decide when to put her in a nursing home, LOL.

Explain to her that humans are not killed for epilepsy, and they often live a normal life under medication. Dogs are no different. A dog is part of the family, often like a child. If I were you, it would feel like she was saying that her grandson should be killed because he had epilepsy. Tell her how you feel about it.

Unless the dog is in pain, I don't see any reason for putting him
down. Alot of people live with medical conditions that are worse
and so do pets. It sounds like you love your dog alot and that is
great. Maybe your mother in law is not a dog person. But
regardless it isn't nice for someone to suggest that. It's your
dog, and maybe she just dosen't know enough about the dogs
condition to consider putting him down. I wouldn't suggest you
hate her, but maybe ask her to keep her comments to herself.

Some people just don't understand the deep love others can have for a pet. For them, if it becomes too bothersome or too much work, they find it easy to (in essense) throw it away and get another. It's a side effect of our throw away society, where too many fail to commit (that goes for realtionships with people as well). Just let it roll off your back, because she's your MIL, you are sort of stuck with each other. Pity her instead.

I'd forgive her for being ignorant. Some people think of animals as posessions not knowing they can respond to medical care just like people.
There is a chance that she thinks the dog is suffering. But I would just make her aware that you love the dog and wouldn't allow it to suffer, but thanks for her opinion.

There is no reason to hate her for her opinion. Just ignore her if you are treating the dog. Hate never helped anything.
