I grew up around German Shorthaired Pointers, but I would not recommend them unless you have a large yard, are committed to a dog that is high energy, and are willing to deal with a dog who will think that they are smarter than you. Overall, my experiences have been great with the breed. They take rough play from older children, and even biting from my little brother without showing any aggression. They're also a very protective breed. If you think that this sounds like a nice breed, it would be best if you find a local rescue group for the breed, and talk to the people. They should be able to find a dog to match your needs. In fact, this is the course you should go with any breed. Most of the dogs in rescue groups are taken from shelters, and these people know the breed, and can better prepare you to take home these animals. I do not recommend a Lab, they are not the perfect dog like so many people seem to think that they are. They bite, they chew things up. Sure, I've known some good labs, but I've known more bad labs.

RE:
what is the most mild mannered breed of dog?
I currently have a 6 month old male rottie, and I want to get another pup. I'm looking for a breed that is excellent with kids, very laid back and mild mannered. The only breed I can think of is a lab.. But they aren't very laid back (most of them are pretty active). Any advice would be...

Since you have a Rottie, I am sure you are making sure he is part of the pack, with the poeple. I have a Rottie/German Shepard mix who is 135 lb now. Any dog will be great with kids given the right owners. I don't want to say anything bad about labs, but I think they are kinda stupid. Love all dogs, I assure you, and they are great if trained to find stuff if needed by the NYPD or other law envorcement. Mixed breeds and shelter dogs are the best. I have a basset mix and have some others in my home. Don't worry so much about the breed, go to a shelter and the best one will find you, and will fall in love with your Rottie, Just remember, Dogs Rule!

The most mild mannered dog will be an adult or senior dog.
Puppies (any breed) have a lot of energy!

Every dog has its own personality so regardless of breed, I'd make sure whatever individual dog you decide to get has the characteristics you're looking for. I agree with a lot of the suggestions though. Great Danes, Goldens, and Boxers are generally great with kids.

Mixed breed dogs often make the best pets, check ur local animal shelter for a dog that desperately needs a home. They have both adult dogs and puppies in all varities. The shelter workers know which dogs have been good with children. Save a life and get rewarded with a good pet.

Lots of people are saying labs and golden retrievers. From experience I think cocker spaniels are the best. They are happy dogs and it is very uncommon for them to bark at intruders plus they don't need much exercie. They would be perfect for your lifestyle!!!
Border collies need lots of exercise so they are no good.
Grey hounds cannot be let off leash and could potentially attack young children and your kids may by accident let it off the leash and then it's gone forever.
Beagles are laid back and friendly but they are actuaclly not that smart, believe it or not! They are considered dumb dogs by professionals. People would think that they're smart because they are used at airports but they are just good scent dogs. They need 80-100 repititions to learn a command and do not follow human instructions very well.
Boxers can be good dogs but that is only certain ones.
Overall cocker spaniels do not bark at intruders, are friendly, good with kids, look cute and do not need alot of exercise!
You cannot beat them!

Beagles are mild tempered and laid back. They are very bright dogs. And very easy to train. They're good around other dogs and great around people and children. Another good dog is the small collies and the Samarian Alaskan huskies.
One thing you should remember, sometimes it doesn't matter what other kind of pup you get, dogs still have they're personalities. So the sooner you get the new pup the better. After a period of time Rotweilers establish their attitudes very quickly.
