First of all, do you remember your dreams?

You need to have good dream awareness to have lucid dreams. Start a dream journal where you record your dreams.

Second, here's one technique. Ask yourself, "Are you dreaming?" during the day. The more times the better like 30 or more times!

Then do a test to see if you are dreaming (even when you know you are obviously not dreaming). Pinch yourself, look at a clock to see if the numbers change. Look at some newspaper or other written piece of paper to see if the letters change. Look around to see if anything is odd. Do you notice anything different or odd? Then tell yourself, "Okay, right now I am not dreaming."

After about 2-3 weeks of this... the habit of checking yourself will creep into your dreams, too. You will someday "check" in a dream and then say--- hey, I am in a dream!

Now what?

Third, have a plan for a lucid dream. Fly or meet a famous person or whatever.

I would say something like.... "Oh, I will meet Einstein when I walk around the corner." Make up your plan beforehand. Don't say, "Einstein APPEAR!" That's too hard to do, in my opinion.... just say... when I go HERE (like around the corner) then I will see WHATEVER.

Fourth, when you start losing control. Try spinning around that can help you stop losing control.

I did all of the above and I did have a lot more lucid dreams. But they only lasted a few minutes..... I had a really hard time controlling them! Also it was a lot of work--- just thinking about dreams all the time-- so I quit. I still have a lucid dream every now and again, but very few.

First let me say, if infobod is looking, that lucifer is his name not lucid. Do your homework, please. I couldn't even politely laugh if it was meant to be a joke.

What lexi m said are common things people use to ld. I have to include though that none of them are absolutly necessary to ld. I could ld before I started my journal and had little awareness, but I started experiencing more after I began it.
You can dream sensations ie: feel the pinch as well as be able to read text. All things are possible in the dream; you can make yourself able to read and feel. I recommend reading about more reality checks and doing at least two each time.
It's a good idea to have a plan. It can suck being lucid then not able to think of what to do. I'm alright observing my dream world at times, but mostly I want control of my dream along with being lucid.
From all the research I've done on lucid dreaming, it is known to be easier to make things "appear" around a corner or when you open a door so I always recommend to do it that way. However, on some of my early lucid dreams, I was able to draw circles in the air with my finger. At first it didn't work, I told myself that I KNEW I was dreaming, and it worked. I've also stretched a dream character right in front of me. There again not absolutly necessary.
Spinning is great to "refresh" the dream if you find it fading (usually means you're waking up). It's also used to change the dream scene.Keep in mind that you're dreaming since focusing on spinning as well as your dream scene changing could result in losing your awareness.
It's well known to be easier to lucid dream if you get up an hour or two earlier that normal. Get out of bed for 15 mins or so then go back to bed. This is the WBTB/Wake Back to Bed method. You can help by repeating to yourself as you're laying back down something like 'it is a dream'. This is the basics for the MILD /Mneomic Induction of Lucid Dream method.
Read what you can about lucid dreams.Keep an open mind and do different things- you never know what will work. Do not work too hard on this- lucid dreams like to elude those that chase too hard.

I listed some websites below. Most are going to repeat what others say. I prefer ld4all most, but not recommended it if you have a slow computer.

Lucid dreaming is a real interesting thing to try. I have not yet mastered it but I'm learning.

I got books off amazon.com to help with my studies and yes, there are some techniques used to get the effect you want. Most of it includes learning how to realize your dreaming, and then controlling the dream, you are in. There are also ways to program your mind to dream in certain contexts.

This isn't something you just up and one day do. It takes a lot of practise and experimenting.

read carlos casteneda books like "the art of dreaming" Long version short: 1. be aware when you are falling asleep. 2. give yourself a task (the same task until you can do it) 3. don't give up on doing that task until you can do it. 4. don't obsess about your task during your waking hours. 5. don't focus on items in your dreams, just glance at things briefly.

It's pretty fun to do. Certainly makes dreaming a lot more interesting.
